Advancing into the hardware track! OpenAI is preparing AI speakers, glasses, and smart lights, with shipments as early as 2027.

Media reports state that OpenAI currently has over 200 employees developing a range of AI-powered devices, including a smart speaker, as well as potentially smart glasses and a smart desk lamp.
The report indicates that the smart speaker will be OpenAI’s first hardware product to launch, with an expected price between $200 and $300. According to two sources, the speaker is not expected to ship until at least February 2027. The report says this speaker will be equipped with a camera, enabling it to gather information about users and their surroundings.
This capability includes recognizing objects on nearby desks, as well as identifying conversations taking place around the speaker. The camera will also support facial recognition similar to Apple’s Face ID, allowing users to verify purchases via facial recognition.
The report states that mass production of the smart glasses may not be possible until 2028. As for the smart lamp, although a prototype has been developed, it’s unclear whether it will actually come to market.
Previously, OpenAI acquired startup io Products, founded by former Apple designer Jony Ive, for $6.5 billion, officially entering the hardware industry in hopes of seizing opportunities amid growing demand for physical AI and augmented reality. Ive is widely regarded as the core figure behind Apple’s design philosophy, having participated in the design of almost all major Apple products since joining the company in the 1990s, until his departure in 2019.
Previously, Meta, Facebook’s parent company, achieved strong success with its Ray-Ban smart glasses. This product allows users to record and take photos through a miniature camera, and also enables content livestreaming. Reportedly, Apple and Google are also developing their own smart glasses products.
