AI demand is spurring TSMC to accelerate capacity expansion, with monthly 2nm production capacity aiming for 120,000 wafers by the end of the year.

The AI chip arms race is reshaping the pace of expansion of the world's most advanced wafer production capacity.

According to Taiwan's Economic Daily News on September 28, tech giants such as Apple, Nvidia, AMD, Qualcomm, and MediaTek have recently increased their pre-orders for TSMC's 2nm family of wafers by 10% to 20% . Driven by this, TSMC has significantly accelerated its 2nm capacity expansion plan, aiming for a monthly capacity of 120,000 wafers by the end of this year , far exceeding market expectations of 90,000 to 100,000 wafers, and effectively achieving its original 2027 capacity target two years ahead of schedule. This expansion speed has been officially confirmed by TSMC as the fastest in its history.

Hou Yung-ching, Senior Vice President and Deputy Co-COO of TSMC, revealed at this year's TSMC North American Technology Forum that to meet the strong demand from AI and other sectors, five 2nm fabs will simultaneously ramp up production this year for the first time , including two in Hsinchu and three in Kaohsiung. He also pointed out that the first-year wafer output of 2nm will increase by 45% compared to the first-year output of 3nm in 2023, and the compound annual growth rate of 2nm capacity from 2026 to 2028 will reach as high as 70% .

Meanwhile, TSMC's 3nm capacity expansion is also progressing simultaneously. The Southern Taiwan Science Park's 3nm monthly capacity will approach 180,000 wafers in the fourth quarter of this year, and three new 3nm wafer fabs will be added in Taiwan, Arizona, and Japan, comprehensively deploying a global advanced process supply chain.

Customers are placing numerous follow-up orders, and the 2nm production expansion is significantly ahead of schedule.

The market originally estimated that TSMC's 2nm family of wafers would have a monthly production capacity of approximately 90,000 to 100,000 wafers by the end of this year, and could reach 110,000 to 140,000 wafers by 2027 with continued double-digit growth. However, according to reports, industry sources revealed that due to strong demand from Apple and non-Apple customers, the speed and scale of TSMC's new 2nm family capacity ramp-up have both reached record highs, far exceeding the capacity ramp-up rate of the 3nm family in its first year .

The client lineup for this round of additional orders includes key players in the AI chip and high-performance computing (HPC) field—Apple, Nvidia, AMD, Qualcomm, and MediaTek—with increases ranging from 10% to 20%. The report states that TSMC typically does not comment on client information or market rumors, but Hou Yongqing's public statement at the North American Technology Forum officially confirms this accelerated capacity expansion.

According to reports, industry analysts point out that TSMC's large-scale expansion of its 2nm family of production capacity is crucial for customers who require large-scale and stable advanced process wafer manufacturing support, helping to secure supply chain security and support their respective AI product roadmaps.

Five factories simultaneously ramp up production, achieving the fastest 2nm ramp-up speed in history.

According to reports, Hou Yongqing's statement at the North American Technology Forum is the clearest official signal of capacity expansion to date. The simultaneous ramp-up of five 2nm fabs this year is unprecedented in TSMC's history, and this scale of deployment itself reflects the urgency of demand.

From a quantitative perspective, the first-year wafer output of 2nm increased by 45% compared to the first-year output of 3nm in 2023, meaning that TSMC has achieved a steeper capacity ramp-up curve at more advanced process nodes. From 2026 to 2028, the compound annual growth rate of 2nm capacity is expected to reach 70% , a growth rate that is extremely rare in the semiconductor industry.

In contrast, TSMC's 3nm capacity expansion is relatively stable—with a projected compound annual growth rate of approximately 25% from 2022 to 2027. The significant difference in growth rates reflects the rapid shift in market demand for more advanced processes.

The global deployment of 3nm technology is progressing simultaneously, with the new US plant set to begin mass production in 2027.

While accelerating the expansion of its 2nm production capacity, TSMC's 3nm capacity expansion has not slowed down either. The monthly production capacity of 3nm at Southern Taiwan Science Park will approach 180,000 wafers in the fourth quarter of this year , and is optimistically expected to reach 200,000 to 210,000 wafers by 2027, representing an annual increase of about 16%.

In terms of global capacity deployment, TSMC is adding three new 3nm wafer fabs, located in Taiwan, Arizona, and Japan, to support the continued demand for 3nm processes. In addition, TSMC is continuing to convert 5nm equipment in Taiwan to support 3nm capacity, further improving the utilization efficiency of existing facilities.

The second wafer fab in the new US plant will use 3-nanometer process technology. Construction has been completed and mass production is scheduled to begin in the second half of 2027. This will be TSMC's most advanced process node in the United States, which is of great strategic significance for meeting the supply chain needs of local customers in the United States.

Analysts believe that TSMC's accelerated expansion of 2nm production will have a direct impact on the market on multiple levels.

For customers , the early release of production capacity means that major customers such as Apple and Nvidia can obtain sufficient advanced process wafers earlier, which helps to accelerate the mass production of AI chips and terminal products and reduce the risk of supply chain bottlenecks. For TSMC itself , the better-than-expected expansion of 2nm capacity will significantly increase the revenue contribution of advanced processes. Coupled with the global multi-site layout of 3nm, the overall operating momentum is expected to continue to strengthen. For the semiconductor industry as a whole , TSMC’s rapid expansion at the most advanced process nodes further consolidates its dominant position in the global wafer foundry market, and also means that the investment boom in AI infrastructure is accelerating from the chip design end to the manufacturing end.
