The AI emotional companion field welcomes an “old friend” once again.
On July 27th, Tencent QQ announced the official relaunch of QQ Pet. Users can now search for “QQ Pet” on mobile QQ to adopt one anew. As a national-level internet IP that accompanied the growth of the post-80s and post-90s generations, this little penguin that once lived on the desktop is returning to users after eight years offline.
However, this time QQ Pet is no longer the electronic pet that only responded according to a fixed program.
According to Tencent, the new QQ Pet retains classic adoption gameplay, but has upgraded to a 3D appearance and integrated Tencent's Hunyuan Hy3 large model. Pets now have different personality settings, can proactively communicate with their owners, record daily life, generate pet diaries, and participate in multiple social scenarios including QQ chat.
As AI-powered emotional companions have become one of the hottest global AI application tracks, Tencent’s revival of QQ Pet, a carrier of many people's youthful memories, is less a “nostalgia play” and more an exploration of new possibilities for social products through AI.
Compared to the old version, the biggest change in the new QQ Pet comes from its AI capabilities.
Previously, every QQ Pet interaction was from preset scripts. Whether feeding, bathing, or chatting, responses to users were fixed. With the integration of Hunyuan Hy3 large model, QQ Pet now possesses different “personalities.”
Users can choose various personalities such as “Little Sun,” “Clingy,” “Naughty,” or “Drama Queen.” Pets of different personalities will use different tones to communicate, proactively greet, remind about weather, and express needs. In studying, working, or adventuring, pets will proactively share their experiences and generate exclusive “pet diaries” based on daily events, making companionship more continuous.
Meanwhile, QQ Pet has also completed a product form upgrade.
The new version fully adopts 3D modeling, introduces new species like dogs and garlic geese in addition to the classic penguin, and gives more realistic feedback when users touch the pet’s fur or movements.
Notably, since QQ’s main usage scenario has moved to mobile, the pet is no longer limited to a standalone window, but can now appear within the chat interface, bouncing in the chat box, interacting with friends’ pets, integrating the AI character into daily social life.
QQ Pet was once one of the most successful virtual adoption products in China’s internet history.
Launched in 2005, it quickly gained popularity based on QQ’s massive user base. Logging in daily to feed, bathe, study with, and work alongside the penguin became many users' most familiar internet memory. For many, QQ Pet was not just a mini-game but a social symbol, accompanying a generation of netizens through the PC internet era's most prosperous years.
But with the rise of mobile internet, QQ Pet gradually lost its space to survive.
On one hand, users shifted en masse to smartphones, making the long-term “hang up” and frequent care gameplay harder to fit fragmented usage habits. On the other hand, scripted interactions quickly consumed users’ sense of novelty, and electronic pets could never truly build lasting companionship.
Eventually, Tencent officially ceased QQ Pet operations in 2018, closing an era.
Now, the development of AI technology has changed this situation.
Large models give virtual characters natural language dialogue, long-term memory, emotional feedback, and the ability for proactive expression, truly making sustained companionship possible for AI characters.
Compared to creating a brand-new unfamiliar IP, QQ Pet naturally possesses brand recognition and emotional assets. For Tencent, AI precisely gives this classic product—once shelved due to technological limitations—a new opportunity to revitalize.
From this perspective, QQ Pet’s return is more like a test field for Tencent’s AI social layout.
In recent years, Tencent has continuously promoted integration between AI and social, whether with QQ, WeChat or Tencent Yuanbao, exploring how AI can become a new connection method between people and digital characters.
But the greatest value of QQ Pet may not necessarily be as a new AI chatbot, but rather, through QQ’s natural social relation chain, to make AI characters into new social media and foster increased interaction between friends thanks to a pet.
However, for QQ Pet to truly usher in a “second spring,” it still faces many challenges.
First, the AI emotional companion track is already crowded. Character.AI, Replika, and many domestic AI companion apps and AI toys are all competing for users’ time. Though QQ Pet has nostalgic appeal, how to continuously provide high-quality interactive experiences and avoid losing users as novelty fades remains the greatest test.
Second, large model capabilities are converging; what determines product competitiveness is no longer just the model itself, but product design and social ecosystem. Whether QQ Pet can fully leverage QQ’s relational strengths to make pets truly a new entry point for social activation, rather than just nostalgia, will decide its future potential.
In addition, AI products generally face high inference costs. How to improve companionship experience while exploring sustainable business models will also be a question Tencent must answer in future.
From PC-era electronic pets to digital companionship in the AI era, QQ Pet has accomplished a “rebirth” spanning nearly twenty years.
For Tencent, what it truly wishes to revive may not be just QQ Pet, but that social entrance capable of continuously triggering user interaction and carrying emotional connections.
As AI redefines the relationship between people and digital characters today, whether this penguin can once more become a companion for a generation remains for the market to decide.
