Alibaba releases 3D world model "Happy Oyster," targeting game and film content production.
```
On April 16, Alibaba released the world model Happy Oyster, further expanding its AI product matrix, targeting content production fields such as gaming and film.
Happy Oyster can generate three-dimensional environments and interactive videos, supporting scenarios like film, video content, and game development. According to Alibaba, the product is currently in limited early-access phase. The model was developed by Token Hub (ATH Innovation Division), a newly established business unit under Alibaba, and comes from the same team as the previously released video generation model Happy Horse.
This release is the latest move in Alibaba’s recent flurry of AI product launches. Alibaba has established cloud computing and AI as its core growth engines and set a goal to increase related annual revenue to $100 billion within five years, about a fivefold growth from its current scale.
Product Capabilities: From Passive Generation to Active Simulation
Happy Oyster is built on a native multi-modal architecture, supporting multi-modal understanding and combined audio-video generation. It has already achieved two core functions: Roaming (Wander) and Directing (Direct), allowing users to create interactive, performable, and explorable AI digital worlds in real time.
Alibaba positions this model as part of the “world simulator” category, unlike traditional text-to-video models with passive workflows—which depend on user-provided prompts and generate final content after rendering. The world model uses world evolution modeling over long time spans, shifting the content production logic from “passive generation” to “active simulation of world evolution.”
The technical goal of world models is to model and restore the physical and spatial properties of the real world. These models not only serve as a fundamental base for 3D content generation but are also widely used in areas such as robot training and environmental perception for autonomous driving. Compared to the more mature technology paradigm of large language models, world models are still in the exploration stage.
Competitive Landscape: Tencent and Google Already Deployed
In the world model field, Alibaba faces direct competition from major domestic and international technology companies. Tencent has launched the open-source world model series Hunyuan3D, while Google under Alphabet operates the world model Genie.
A week before Happy Oyster’s release, Alibaba launched the video generation model Happy Horse, claiming it topped several global rankings upon launch and created a major stir in China’s AI industry. Alibaba has continued to accelerate the pace of AI product releases recently and has adjusted its internal organizational structure to strengthen its ability to commercialize technologies, pushing early investments to yield real revenue.
Currently, Happy Oyster is only open to a limited number of users for early access, and the pathway to large-scale commercialization is yet to be clarified.
