Anthropic urgent appeal: Pentagon "ban" could cause losses of billions of dollars this year
```
Anthropic is making every legal effort to oppose the US Department of Defense’s designation of it as a "National Security Supply Chain Risk."
On March 12, according to CNBC, the company filed a request with the US Court of Appeals for the District of Columbia Circuit on Wednesday to stay the enforcement of that designation pending judicial review. This legal dispute stems from ongoing disagreements over standards for the military use of artificial intelligence tools. US Secretary of Defense Pete Hegseth banned the Pentagon and its contractors from using Anthropic’s products, citing the company’s refusal to relax usage restrictions on its AI systems.
The core conflict between the two parties is: Anthropic insists on imposing relevant restrictions on the military use of its AI systems, and this position ultimately led Hegseth to label the company as a "supply chain risk" and completely ban its use within the defense system.
This legal battle over the boundaries of AI militarization is evolving into a landmark case that could reshape the relationship between tech companies and the US defense system.
Hundreds of Corporate Clients Inquire; Anthropic Says Blacklist Could Cause Billions in Losses
This application is part of a dual-track legal offensive Anthropic launched this week. The company earlier this week also filed a separate lawsuit in a federal court in California challenging the blacklist decision.
In the documents submitted to the DC Circuit Court of Appeals on Wednesday, Anthropic said that the Pentagon's supply chain determination would cause the company "irreparable harm." According to Anthropic's court documents, more than 100 corporate clients have contacted the company regarding this designation.
Anthropic’s lawyers warned in the documents: "Based on Anthropic’s best estimate, this adverse government action could result in hundreds of millions or even billions of dollars in lost revenue by 2026.”
