Apple is developing an AI-powered wearable pin device.

On January 21, The Information cited sources revealing Apple is developing an AI wearable pin device, though the project is still in its early stages and is easily subject to cancellation.

According to reports, the device is similar in size to AirTag, featuring a flat disc design with an aluminum and glass casing. The front of the device will be equipped with both standard and wide-angle cameras to capture images and photos of the user's surroundings.

It is said that the product will be released as early as 2027. Apple has already set up a mass production plan, targeting an output of 20 million units.

Previously, similar products such as Humane AI Pin and Rabbit R1 have not succeeded in the market; the former discontinued service in February 2025, while the latter had poor sales.

This is only one of Apple's multiple projects exploring AI hardware. The company is also developing smart glasses, Apple Glass, AirPods equipped with cameras, and Apple Ring, among other products.

Design Details and Core Functions

The Information, citing insiders, reports that design specifications for the AI pin have already taken initial shape.

The device will be equipped with three microphones and a speaker, with magnetic induction charging on the back similar to the Apple Watch charging method.

Unlike AirTag, this device will feature a physical button.

Engineers are working to keep the device at a size similar to AirTag, although the thickness may differ. The camera configuration is one of its core functions, with a combination of standard and wide-angle lenses aimed at providing users with comprehensive image capturing capabilities.

The device is expected to be powered by Apple's Apple Intelligence technology, though specific AI features have not yet been disclosed.

Lessons from Previous Attempts and Market Challenges

Apple is not the first company to try developing an AI pin, but previous attempts have failed to meet expectations.

Humane AI Pin, founded by a former Apple executive, attracted much attention but ultimately failed. This $700 device with a $24 monthly fee discontinued its service in February 2025, leaving users with a useless tech artifact.

Rabbit R1 tried to enter the market with a more approachable positioning. Despite a rough start, it is still operating through software updates. However, the product has never truly captured the market, with sales remaining niche.

It is noteworthy that Jony Ive, together with OpenAI CEO Sam Altman, has already created a prototype for the first OpenAI device, which is also expected to be released in 2027.

Although the specifics of this device are still unknown, it's not hard to imagine it as smart glasses or some form of AI brooch.

Multi-pronged AI Hardware Strategy

The AI pin is not Apple's only bet in wearable AI hardware.

Reportedly, Apple Glass smart glasses may launch by the end of 2026, providing similar audio and camera functionalities. The device may further add augmented reality features, expected in 2027.

For users who do not wear glasses, Apple is considering releasing AirPods with built-in cameras.

This earbud-shaped device will be equipped with the same core components as the pin, possibly relying on the iPhone for processing, with responses transmitted directly to the user's ear.

The rumored Apple Ring smart ring is also among the discussed products. After being talked about for a long time, it is still mainly seen as a controller for peripherals rather than a standalone AI device.
