Apple's development of a foldable screen iPad has encountered obstacles, with the expected release date postponed to 2029 or later.
Apple's planned foldable display iPad has encountered technical challenges, and its originally scheduled release in 2028 may be delayed. On October 21, according to media reports, Apple's foldable display iPad, equipped with an approximately 18-inch large screen, faces engineering challenges in terms of weight, functionality, and display technology, possibly postponing its debut to 2029 or even later. According to the reports, the most difficult issues currently faced by the foldable display iPad prototype are cost and weight control. The device’s estimated price is as high as $3,000, roughly three times the price of the 13-inch iPad Pro, and such a high price will undoubtedly limit its market acceptance. Additionally, the weight of the prototype is a major concern for engineers. The test device weighs about 3.5 pounds (approximately 1.59 kilograms), comparable to a MacBook Pro, while the current mainstream iPad Pro models weigh only between 1 and 1.3 pounds. The excessive weight clearly contradicts the iPad series' focus on portability, making weight reduction a key development challenge for the project. For its core component—the display—Apple is cooperating with Samsung Display to develop an approximately 18-inch OLED panel. According to media sources, Apple’s goal is to minimize the screen crease issue common to foldable display devices, a technical requirement that is also being applied to its future plans for a foldable display iPhone. However, developing an 18-inch seamless foldable display has proven to be extremely complex and expensive. Although OLED technology can offer more vivid colors and a thinner display layer, applying it to large foldable devices results in exponentially increasing technical difficulties and costs. Reportedly, the new tablet prototype, internally codenamed J312, does not include any external display. When closed, the device resembles a Mac notebook, with both sides having aluminum casings. When unfolded, it is about the size of a 13-inch laptop. Despite these setbacks, the foldable display iPad project remains an important part of Apple’s broader innovation strategy. Having just released the newly designed ultra-thin iPhone Air model, Apple is committed to developing a series of cutting-edge products, from smart glasses to desktop robot devices, to strengthen its leadership position in the technology industry.
