OpenAI’s highly anticipated text-to-video application Sora demonstrated strong market appeal right after its initial launch.

According to the latest data from app intelligence provider Appfigures, even with availability limited to the U.S. and Canada and an invite-only model, Sora’s iOS app received a total of 164,000 downloads within the first two days after launching on September 30 and October 1. This propelled it rapidly to third place on the overall U.S. App Store rankings.

On its first day, Sora logged 56,000 downloads. Although this figure does not match OpenAI’s own ChatGPT or Google’s Gemini, it is on par with xAI’s Grok and surpasses the early performance of other major AI apps such as Anthropic’s Claude and Microsoft’s Copilot.

Notably, Sora’s invite-only model means that the current download figures may not fully reflect its market potential. Analysts believe that once the app is fully open, its user growth could be even more impressive.

First-day downloads surpass some competitors, app store ranking enters top three

According to a previous article by Jienwen, OpenAI officially released its most advanced video generation model to date, Sora 2.0, on Tuesday, and simultaneously launched an iPhone app called “Sora by OpenAI”, aimed at bringing AI video creation to the masses. Users can create and share AI-generated videos with friends. “Explore, play, and share your imagination in an experimental community,” says Sora’s App Store description. Some analysts point out that OpenAI is adopting a Facebook-like early strategy, using invitation-based access and cutting-edge content to enter the social media business.

To enable a fairer comparison, Appfigures standardized the first-day U.S. and Canada download data for major AI apps. The data shows that Sora’s launch performance ranks in the industry’s top tier.

Specifically, the ChatGPT and Gemini iOS apps recorded 81,000 and 80,000 downloads on their respective first launch days, taking a leading position. Sora and Grok followed with 56,000 downloads each. By comparison, Sora easily outperformed Claude (21,000) and Copilot (7,000) at launch, demonstrating strong competitive strength in the early stage. This comparison highlights Sora’s ability to attract widespread attention from early users in the highly competitive AI app market.

Besides downloads, Sora’s performance on the app store charts further confirms its popularity. According to Appfigures, the app surged to third place on the overall U.S. App Store rankings on its second day online.

This ranking also outperformed most competitors. For reference, ChatGPT reached the top spot on its second day, while Grok, Gemini, and Copilot ranked fourth, sixth, and nineteenth, respectively, on their respective second days. Claude ranked 78th.

Sora managed to achieve outstanding results even with strict entry barriers, which the market interprets as evidence of significant potential demand for AI video generation tools. As the app is still in its invite-only stage, its strong performance is seen as a very positive signal. Analysts note that if Sora opens to all users, its install numbers could attract even more users.
