Bill Gates: AI is powerful enough to cause "1 billion deaths"

In an interview segment airing this weekend on NBC's "Meet the Press," Gates stated:

"AI is indeed powerful enough to cause events that... you know, events that kill a billion people. Never before in history has a weapon been as powerful as the combination of bad guys and the latest AI tools."

As technology rapidly iterates, Silicon Valley's warnings about the potential for AI to bring about devastating disasters continue to escalate.

Earlier this month, Jacob Coxon, an ordinary employee at Anthropic, resigned from his job and accused his former employers, Anthropic and OpenAI, of "betting our lives" by "accelerating the rush toward superintelligent AI."

Another Anthropic employee said he believes there is a greater than 10% chance that AI will wipe out all of humanity within the next decade.

These remarks have drawn mainstream attention to this long-standing and controversial issue in the field, prompting public calls for the industry to take more measures to ensure the security of its technologies.

Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei subsequently called for a slowdown in AI development, a proposal that quickly gained support from peers such as OpenAI CEO Sam Altman and Elon Musk.

In the interview, Gates stated that industry self-regulation is far from sufficient.

"Law enforcement and politicians need to be involved in the discussion to clarify the form of security and regulatory measures, and this must be a mandatory requirement."

In an article published in August, Gates pointed out that malicious actors could use increasingly powerful AI tools to launch cyberattacks, scams, spread disinformation, and cause other forms of large-scale disruption to hospitals, financial institutions, power grids, and government systems.
