The fire was extinguished by onsite personnel themselves. So far, authorities have confirmed no casualties and no gas leaks have been found. Relevant departments are investigating the exact cause of the fire and the number of evacuees.

SK Hynix stated: "The accident seems to have occurred during gas-related operations." The company also explained that since evacuated employees have not yet returned to work, "it is still being checked whether production equipment was affected."

This is not the first accident at SK Hynix's Cheongju factory. Eleven days earlier, at 10:32 am on June 1, a fire broke out in the gas room on the sixth floor of the connecting area between the M15 and M15X factories in the same campus. According to Reuters citing Yonhap News Agency, the fire was quickly brought under control after the sprinkler system was activated, but during the process, some fluorine gas leaked, causing injuries to six people, who have been sent to the company's hospital for treatment.

That incident similarly triggered the emergency evacuation of about 3,600 employees.

SK Hynix's spokesperson at the time stated: "We have immediately completed a full evacuation, and the fire has been extinguished. We will cooperate with relevant departments to investigate the cause and report to the regulatory agencies." The company also added that there were no abnormalities in equipment operations, production was not interrupted, and employees will return to their posts after safety inspections are completed.

M15 and M15X are SK Hynix's core chip manufacturing plants in Cheongju. The ignition points of both incidents were gas rooms—a key area for storing and transporting specialty process gases in chip manufacturing.
