ByteDance's global ambitions are being showcased in more and more business areas.
Amid the explosion of AI applications, over the past three months, an AI assistant app called Cici has consistently ranked among the top 20 free app downloads on Google Play in markets such as Indonesia, Malaysia, the Philippines, Mexico, and the UK. Especially in Mexico, it held the top spot for daily downloads on Google Play Store for an entire week.
Chinese users may find Cici unfamiliar, but as soon as they see its icon, they can immediately associate it with ByteDance's hugely popular domestic AI app, Doubao. The only difference is that the Doubao icon features a short-haired female figure, while Cici features a long-haired female.
Although Cici and Doubao have a deep "blood relation," there are obvious differences in their functionality, technical architecture, and market positioning.
Functionally, Cici lacks the ability to generate music and video content, and users cannot directly share their creations on the platform. In other words, Cici is relatively weak in terms of social functions. This simplification makes Cici more like a lightweight AI tool focused on core needs rather than a complex creative community.
In terms of technical architecture, Doubao mainly relies on ByteDance's self-developed Doubao large model, while Cici adopts a more open technology path. Although the app leverages ByteDance's image editing tool PicPic and coding assistant Coze, for its core text generation capability, Cici has chosen to integrate advanced third-party technologies.
Currently, there is almost no "ByteDance" branding visible within the entire app, but according to market sources, ByteDance has confirmed to be the controlling stakeholder of the app.
In terms of marketing strategy, Cici has adopted the typical “ByteDance style” approach. In Mexico, Cici ran more than 400 groups of advertisements in October, focusing on “completely free,” “can solve math problems,” and other key user pain points. This “down-to-earth” way of communication lowered the user threshold for understanding and downloading the app.
At the same time, Cici has made full use of the TikTok ecosystem advantage under ByteDance. On TikTok, Cici’s official account has accumulated about 123,000 followers. On TikTok, many creators have also posted a large number of sponsored content videos under the hashtag #ciciai, demonstrating the app’s features through live demonstrations, sparking a viral effect on social platforms, and driving traffic to Cici.
Data from market research firm Sensor Tower confirms the effectiveness of this strategy. In the past three months, Cici’s downloads have remained high in markets such as Indonesia, Malaysia, the Philippines, Mexico, and the UK.
Currently, Cici’s overseas breakthrough is only a microcosm of ByteDance’s global AI strategy. Looking at ByteDance’s AI deployment, a clear route toward comprehensive expansion is evident.
ByteDance has invested heavily in AI infrastructure. According to market sources, in 2025 ByteDance plans to invest over $12 billion in AI infrastructure, mainly for building its own computing power centers and DPU chip research and development. Investments on such a scale provide a solid foundation for its global AI application expansion.
In terms of model technology, ByteDance’s newly open-sourced Seed-OSS-36B model supports a native 512K context window and introduces an innovative “controllable thinking budget” mechanism, allowing users to flexibly adjust the model’s reasoning length and enhance inference efficiency.
From a product matrix perspective, ByteDance’s AI product system is spearheaded by Doubao and has covered numerous scenarios. The Doubao family now includes more than ten sub-models, such as general Pro/Lite versions, role-play, speech synthesis/recognition, text-to-image, video generation, and more.
Wu Lihui, an analyst at Orient Securities, pointed out that ByteDance’s ToC-end AI app deployment is comprehensive, and the chatbot Doubao may be the largest AI Native app in China. ByteDance has products online across all AI application verticals such as chatbots, education, image/video, emotional companionship, etc. Regionally, the products for overseas and domestic markets are generally corresponded one-to-one, and they are deployed on both app and web platforms. With a comprehensive layout and traffic advantage, ByteDance AI products can quickly expand user coverage.
In addition, ByteDance AI also has a relatively high penetration rate on the enterprise end. In addition to underlying technologies and software, ByteDance has also launched AI hardware such as AI earbuds. There was also previous market news of a potential AI phone; though ByteDance denied the AI phone project, it revealed its ambition for AI hardware.
To sum up, ByteDance AI has made extensions in both depth and breadth, presenting an all-encompassing layout and forming a strong open ecosystem trend. In terms of depth, it is a full-stack layout from underlying hardware to upper-layer applications; in terms of breadth, it not only builds super App traffic on the C-end (consumers), but also forms a dual-drive with B-end (business) services.
Now, the success of Cici in overseas markets demonstrates ByteDance’s established global capabilities. These capabilities are not limited to the product itself but also cover multiple dimensions such as market insights, localized operations, and ecosystem construction.
ByteDance demonstrates precise cross-cultural market insight. Cici makes differentiated adjustments for different markets. For example, in Mexico, its emphasis on math problem-solving ability is based on an accurate understanding of local educational needs. Such capability comes from ByteDance’s years of experience operating global products like TikTok.
Moreover, ByteDance has established an efficient global promotion system. Through TikTok influencer marketing and precise ad placements, Cici is able to quickly enhance its visibility in specific markets in a short time.
From a market layout perspective, ByteDance’s strategy is to “surround mature markets from emerging markets.” It first establishes footholds in the UK, Mexico, Southeast Asia, etc., accumulating experience and a user base, rather than directly competing with giants like OpenAI and Google in the US market. Such an open strategy may become an important differentiating advantage for ByteDance in global AI competition.
Looking ahead, ByteDance’s global ambitions are self-evident. ByteDance CEO Liang Rubo has clearly stated: “In the future, ByteDance will steadfastly invest for the long term, pursue intelligent breakthroughs, and serve industrial applications.” This statement reveals ByteDance’s determination in long-term AI competition.
From Doubao to Cici, ByteDance is restructuring its global market layout in the AI era. Clearly, ByteDance’s goal is not just to create a successful AI application, but to build the next product with global influence like TikTok on a worldwide scale.
