Can you trade stocks while you sleep? Robinhood, the "home base for US retail investors," has launched an AI agent that can automatically monitor and trade 24/7.

Robinhood is bringing automated trading capabilities, once exclusive to hedge funds and quantitative firms, directly to nearly 30 million ordinary investors.

At its annual HOOD Summit in Houston on September 29, Robinhood officially launched "Robinhood Agents"—an AI-powered product deeply embedded in its app . Users, without any technical background, can use natural language commands to have the AI analyze the market, formulate strategies, and automatically execute trades, even while the user is asleep.

At the same time, the company also announced plans to launch a series of new products, including 24/7 stock trading, perpetual futures, and profit contracts, marking the most radical step to date for this brokerage firm that champions "financial democratization."

The potential impact of this announcement on the market landscape cannot be ignored. Robinhood is currently the first brokerage firm to launch a native AI trading agent for a large-scale non-technical user base, and other fintech companies and traditional brokerages are expected to follow suit. At the same time, the large-scale involvement of AI agents in retail trading has also raised widespread concerns about increased market volatility and regulatory gaps.

AI agents are stepping out of the "geek circle" and becoming available to all users.

The core logic of Robinhood Agents is to transform the AI trading interface, which was previously only open to technical users, into an in-app experience that anyone can use.

According to Robinhood's official introduction, users only need to name their agent, create a dedicated agent account, and choose one of several models provided by OpenAI and Anthropic—including GPT-6 Luna, GPT-6 Sol, or Anthropic's Opus 4.8—to get started . The entire configuration process requires no programming or technical knowledge.

Once configured, users can issue commands to the agent in plain English, ranging from simple "buy $200 worth of Ford stock" to complex rotation option strategies. The upcoming "Loops" feature will further expand this capability—users can set up a set of strategies as continuous commands, allowing the agent to execute them repeatedly according to predetermined conditions, such as "check the market every morning and trade automatically when conditions are met," or "run an overnight strategy to look for opportunities while the user is sleeping."

On the data front, Robinhood has also launched the "Agent Apps" ecosystem, which integrates with 11 third-party data providers, including Unusual Whales, Nasdaq Investor Intelligence, SpotGamma, and Token Terminal, to provide institutional-grade data support for smart agents. Each application comes with a one-month free trial period.

Usage data shows strong early demand, but large-scale adoption remains uncertain.

In May of this year, Robinhood opened its MCP (Model Context Protocol) tool to technology users, allowing them to integrate third-party AI assistants into their trading accounts. According to Robinhood, since the feature's launch, over 150,000 customers have opened proxy trading accounts, and various AI agents are currently performing nearly 30 million operations daily on the Robinhood platform.

This full rollout to all approximately 29 million users is a formal response to the aforementioned early demands. Abhishek Fatehpuria, Vice President of Product Management at Robinhood, stated, "Whether you're an AI expert or a beginner, if you're not using Robinhood, you're at a disadvantage."

However, it remains to be seen how willing ordinary investors will be to relinquish complete control over their trading to bots. To address this, Robinhood has implemented multiple security mechanisms: the bot can only access funds in a dedicated agent account and cannot access the user's main account; the system defaults to a "transaction confirmation" mode, requiring user approval before executing each transaction; and users can set their own transaction limits. Furthermore, Robinhood states that it has signed zero-data retention agreements with relevant AI research institutions, ensuring the privacy of conversations between users and the bot.

Regarding pricing, GPT-6 Luna will be offered free of charge until the end of this year, while other models will be charged at the standard token rate. Company executives stated that the usage cost in most trading scenarios is "negligible," but the actual cost remains uncertain if computing power costs unexpectedly increase or if users adopt research-intensive strategies extensively.

The company also launched 24/7 trading and perpetual futures, comprehensively expanding its product offerings.

AI agents were not the only highlight of this year's HOOD Summit. Robinhood also announced a series of plans to expand trading hours and asset classes, synergizing with the agent functionality.

24/7 Stock Trading : Robinhood plans to upgrade its existing "24/5" stock trading service (Sunday 8 p.m. to Friday 8 p.m.) to true 24/7 trading, covering weekend hours, pending regulatory approval. This feature will be supported by liquidity from the institutional-grade alternative trading system Bruce ATS.

Perpetual Futures : Robinhood will launch perpetual futures products to eligible U.S. users, initially covering eight cryptocurrencies: BTC, ETH, SOL, XRP, DOGE, ADA, LINK, and HYPE. BTC and ETH will offer up to 10x leverage, while other cryptocurrencies will offer up to 3x leverage. A fee of only 1 basis point will be charged per transaction until the end of the year.

Earnings Contracts : The company will also launch binary options contracts linked to corporate earnings in the forecasting market segment, allowing users to trade on key financial indicators such as company revenue and earnings per share. It is expected to cover more than 20 popular assets, provided through Cboe, and contract fees will be waived until the end of the year.

In addition, Robinhood announced that starting in October, it will extend the trading hours for options on popular assets such as Nvidia, Tesla, SPY and QQQ by 35%, and launch tools such as up to 4x intraday margin and OCO (one-cancel-all) orders to further enhance its appeal to active traders.

The large-scale commercialization of AI agents has also brought a series of risks that still need to be clarified.

From a legal liability perspective, Robinhood's position is that custodial agents do not constitute investment advice, and their advice or actions are similar in nature to a user "asking the internet or a friend." However, the legal framework surrounding agency transactions is still evolving, and the attribution of liability in the event of losses remains undetermined.

At the market level, the simultaneous activity of numerous AI agents can have unpredictable consequences. One noteworthy hypothetical scenario is that if multiple agents begin to "negotiate" and collectively enter or exit a particular asset, it could trigger greater market volatility, and in extreme cases, even panic selling, especially in cases involving malicious actors.

Last week, the share prices of traditional financial institutions such as Charles Schwab, LPL Financial and JPMorgan Chase fell sharply due to concerns that AI agent software might automatically transfer customer funds to higher-yielding accounts, demonstrating the market's high sensitivity to the impact of AI on traditional financial business models.

Robinhood has made the first move, and others are already on their way.

Robinhood is the first brokerage to launch a native AI trading agent to a large number of non-technical users, but whether this first-mover advantage can be sustained remains to be seen.

Fintech and cryptocurrency companies such as eToro, Public, and Coinbase already allow users to integrate their own savvy agents via MCP tools, and these companies are expected to soon launch trading savvy agents directly within their platforms. Traditional brokerages such as Charles Schwab and Fidelity are also believed to follow suit sooner or later.

In a statement, Robinhood CEO Vlad Tenev said, "Ownership is inseparable from the market, and the market is inseparable from traders. We are making Robinhood the best platform for active traders globally, providing them with tools that were once only available to hedge funds, large banks, and quantitative firms."

From a broader perspective, if AI agents eventually execute billions of transactions daily in the market, allowing ordinary investors to deploy complex strategies previously only accessible to institutions, the profound impact on market performance and wealth accumulation patterns remains difficult to assess at present.
