In August, the total retail sales of consumer goods reached 3,966.8 billion yuan, a year-on-year increase of 3.4%. Among these, the retail sales of consumer goods excluding automobiles were 3,557.5 billion yuan, up 3.7%. From January to August, the total retail sales of consumer goods reached 32,390.6 billion yuan, an increase of 4.6%. Of these, the retail sales of consumer goods excluding automobiles were 29,264.3 billion yuan, rising 5.1%.

By location of business units, in August, urban retail sales of consumer goods totaled 3,438.7 billion yuan, a year-on-year increase of 3.2%; rural retail sales of consumer goods were 528.1 billion yuan, up 4.6%. From January to August, urban retail sales of consumer goods totaled 28,105.6 billion yuan, up 4.6%; rural retail sales of consumer goods were 4,285 billion yuan, up 4.7%.
By consumption type, in August, retail sales of goods were 3,517.2 billion yuan, a year-on-year increase of 3.6%; catering revenue was 449.6 billion yuan, up 2.1%. From January to August, retail sales of goods were 28,742.6 billion yuan, up 4.8%; catering revenue was 3,648 billion yuan, up 3.6%.

By retail format, from January to August, among retail enterprises above designated size, the year-on-year retail sales of convenience stores, supermarkets, department stores, specialty stores, and brand franchise stores increased by 6.6%, 4.9%, 1.2%, 5.2%, and 1.7% respectively.
From January to August, national online retail sales reached 9,982.8 billion yuan, a year-on-year increase of 9.6%. Among them, online retail sales of physical goods were 8,096.4 billion yuan, up 6.4%, accounting for 25.0% of the total retail sales of consumer goods; among online retail sales of physical goods, food, clothing, and daily use products increased by 15.0%, 2.4%, and 5.7% respectively.
