Competition in the 2nm mobile chip market intensifies with the entry of MediaTek's Dimensity 9600 Pro.
On September 15, MediaTek released its flagship mobile chip, the Dimensity 9600 Pro, and simultaneously launched the Dimensity 9600M.
On the consumer side, vivo has announced that its X500 Pro series will be the world's first to feature the Dimensity 9600 Pro chip; Zhuo Shijie, head of OPPO's Find series products, confirmed on the same day that the Find X10 Pro Max will be equipped with this chip. According to the currently announced schedule, the vivo X500 series and the OPPO Find X10 series will be released on September 21st and 22nd, respectively.
As MediaTek's first 2nm flagship mobile phone chip, the Dimensity 9600 Pro uses TSMC's 2nm process and incorporates collaborative optimization of design technologies jointly developed by MediaTek and TSMC to improve the matching between chip architecture and manufacturing process.
In terms of CPU, the Dimensity 9600 Pro adopts a "2+3+3" all-big-core architecture, including two C2-Ultra cores with a maximum clock speed of 4.55GHz and six C2-Pro cores. The chip is equipped with a total of 34.5MB of L2, L3 and system-level cache, and supports LPDDR6 memory and UFS 5.0 storage.
According to MediaTek lab tests, compared to the previous generation, the Dimensity 9600 Pro's CPU single-core and multi-core performance are improved by up to 17% and 15% respectively, while power consumption is reduced by 61% at peak multi-core performance. The new generation G2-Ultra NX GPU has a peak performance improvement of up to 27%, power consumption is reduced by 24% at peak performance, ray tracing performance is improved by up to 18%, and it supports game graphics at up to 185 frames per second.
On-device AI is another key focus of this upgrade. The Dimensity 9600 Pro adopts a dual NPU architecture, separating the processing of large model inference from low-power AI tasks that require continuous operation. Among them, the NPU 1090's large model pre-filling performance is improved by 51%, the generation efficiency per unit power consumption is improved by up to 55%, and it supports running hybrid expert models with up to 30 billion parameters on the device.
In terms of imaging, the Dimensity 9600 Pro is equipped with an Imagiq 1290 image processor, which enhances the collaboration between the ISP and NPU, and supports NPU-driven 60fps motion capture, 4K 240fps native slow motion, 4K 120fps Log video, and up to 17 stops of dynamic range.
Before MediaTek, Samsung had already used the 2nm Exynos 2600 in some versions of the Galaxy S26 series, and Apple had also released the A20 Pro using a 2nm process. The difference is that MediaTek provides chip platforms to multiple mobile phone manufacturers, and its entry further extends the 2nm competition to the general-purpose chip market for Android flagship phones.
With vivo and OPPO confirming their plans to adopt the Dimensity 9600 Pro, the first batch of devices using the chip have already received orders. Both manufacturers will release new phones within a week, and the product positioning, pricing, and actual supply range of MediaTek's 2nm chip will become clear.
