Decoding the Mate 90's "Launch and Sale Immediately": Huawei's Tao Architecture Innovation Begins to Take Effect in Terminals

At 10:00 AM on October 1st, Huawei kicked off the National Day holiday smartphone battle with an online press conference.

The five models in the Mate 90 series—Mate 90, Pro, Pro Max, Pro Max Collector's Edition, and RS Master—were officially unveiled and went on sale across all channels at 12:08 PM that day. From Yu Chengdong's appearance on stage to customers paying and picking up their phones, only a little over two hours passed. This marks the first time a Huawei flagship has been launched and simultaneously available for sale on National Day: there was no pre-order waiting period, and it became available for immediate purchase just three days after the official announcement.

This pace itself is a signal. Since late September, the OPPO Find X10 series (starting at 4999 yuan), Xiaomi 18 Pro (starting at 5999 yuan), and Apple's first foldable screen iPhone Duo have been launched one after another, and the high-end market during the National Day holiday is already crowded with players.

At the macro level, IDC data shows that from January to August 2026, China's smartphone shipments declined by 7% year-on-year, and rising storage prices pushed up costs across the industry. However, Huawei's shipments bucked the trend and grew by 13% during the same period. In such a window of opportunity, "launching and selling immediately" requires not only the support of inventory and channel capabilities, but also a positive response to the competition during the National Day holiday.

At the end of the press conference, Yu Chengdong characterized the Mate 90 series as "a testament to the era of China's semiconductor industry, and also an innovative answer to China's operating system industry."

In a price increase cycle, use architectural innovation to improve performance.

The starting prices for the entire series are 5,999 yuan, 6,999 yuan, 9,499 yuan, 10,999 yuan and 12,999 yuan respectively, while the top-of-the-line RS Master with 16GB+2TB is priced at 18,999 yuan.

Before the press conference, the media predicted that the starting price would be around 5,499 yuan, but the final price was slightly higher than expected; affected by the rise in memory prices, the price of the entire series has increased compared with the previous generation.

In an interview with Reuters before the press conference, Yu Chengdong revealed that the rise in memory prices has increased the cost of each Huawei phone by an average of about $200. "We have to raise prices, but at a slower pace." At the press conference, he also emphasized that "despite the sharp rise in memory prices today, our prices are still very competitive."

One relevant statistic is that, according to IDC statistics, the average price of mobile phones in China rose by 11.3% year-on-year in the second quarter, while the average price of Huawei mobile phones actually fell by 14.7%.

The official explanation for this generation's performance upgrade is attributed to the chip architecture. According to the launch event, the Kirin 90 standard edition, equipped with the Kirin 9030, offers a 54% improvement in GPU performance and a 27% improvement in overall system performance compared to the previous generation; the Pro version debuts with the Kirin 9035 NPU, which offers a 51% improvement; the Pro Max and higher models are equipped with the flagship Kirin 9050 series, with the 16GB+512GB version and above upgraded to the Kirin 9050 Pro.

The Kirin 9050 Pro is based on the "Tao Law" logic folding architecture. By reconstructing the internal wiring in three dimensions, the logic units are folded layer by layer and vertical interconnects are used to replace planar traces. Under the premise of unchanged process, the transistor density is 238 million per square millimeter, which is 28% higher than the previous generation. It is also equipped with a mobile security processor that supports post-quantum cryptography algorithms.

This sets it apart from its competitors' approaches: OPPO Find X10 Pro Max is equipped with the 2nm Dimensity 9600 Pro, following the advanced process route of the public version; Huawei, on the other hand, chooses to exchange architectural innovation for performance margin on the existing process.

Constraints also exist in reality. Yu Chengdong frankly admitted that advanced semiconductor production capacity is still limited, with mobile phone chips and Ascend AI chips sharing the same production capacity pool, and the logic folding architecture requiring even more wafers. The coexistence of restrained price increases and tight supply represents both sides of this narrative.

Differentiation: From Stack Parameters to System Warfare

In imaging, Huawei's incremental approach focuses on form rather than just specifications. According to official laboratory data, the entire third-generation Red Maple Primary Color camera series boasts a 37% improvement in color accuracy and a 62% improvement in skin tone reproduction.

Even more noteworthy is the Ruiying Z10 modular camera: it features a built-in 1-inch 50-megapixel sensor, covers a focal length of 24-240mm, supports 10x continuous optical zoom, and can be connected to the Pro Max Collector's Edition and RS Master via the HyperClick super mount. It is priced separately at 5999 yuan, and Yu Chengdong claims that it "surpasses the capabilities of SLR lenses."

Previously, OPPO released a Hasselblad teleconverter kit priced at 1099 yuan, which is essentially still an external optical accessory; the Ruiying Z10, on the other hand, has a built-in independent sensor and focusing system, with the phone only responsible for calculation and storage. The combination of the phone and the module can push the top-of-the-line package to 24998 yuan (RS 2TB 18999 yuan + Ruiying Z10 5999 yuan), indicating that Huawei is testing the limits of professional mobile phone imaging.

Communication is another key upgrade in this generation. According to the press conference, the four-SIM triple-standby (SIM+eSIM combination) feature is an industry first; up to four devices can network with mutual assistance and aggregation, with the official claim of a 40% improvement in weak network speeds; RS Extraordinary Master supports Tiantong and Beidou dual-satellite communication.

In terms of reliability, the lens cover of Pro and higher models uses what the company claims is the industry's first optical Kunlun glass, which improves drop resistance by 20 times; all models have IP68 dust and water resistance up to 6 meters, which is higher than the industry standard of 1.5 meters commonly cited by the media.

In terms of ecosystem, the entire Mate 90 series comes pre-installed with HarmonyOS 7, with the number of HarmonyOS-based terminal devices exceeding 90 million, providing access to over 450,000 applications and services. Huawei's self-developed full-stack architecture, encompassing "chip + system + imaging module," is a business model that differentiates it from other manufacturers; however, the scale of 90 million devices is still significantly smaller than the billion-level existing user base of Android and iOS.

Looking back at the historical data of the Mate series, which has accumulated approximately 500 billion shutter presses and sent 900,000 satellite messages, this product line has always served as a window for showcasing Huawei's technology.

The value of the Mate 90 lies precisely in whether the "architecture for performance" model can continue to work.

Launching and selling immediately, modular cameras, and dual-satellite communication are tactical moves. The real strategic question is whether the depth of self-developed technology can support the continued premium in the high-end market when process iteration slows down.

Ultimately, the results of this press conference will be judged by production capacity and sales volume.
