Eli Lilly: On the Eve of the "Strongest New Product Cycle in Biopharmaceutical History"

Goldman Sachs remains firmly optimistic about Eli Lilly, betting on the "strongest product cycle in biopharmaceutical history."

According to the Chasing Wind Trading Desk, Goldman Sachs Equity Research released a report on October 31, stating that Eli Lilly’s oral weight-loss candidate orforglipron represents "one of the most important new product cycles across the entire biopharmaceutical landscape." Management revealed that global regulatory submissions will begin soon, and the drug is expected to be launched in the U.S. market for obesity treatment next year.

Eli Lilly is consolidating its leading position in the global biopharmaceutical industry with solid performance delivery and forward-looking innovation strategies.

GLP-1 Dominance Continues to Expand

According to a previous Wallstreetcn article, Eli Lilly’s Q3 results exceeded market expectations and it raised its full-year guidance. Weight-loss drug sales were strong, with Q3 Mounjaro revenue up 109% year-on-year, and Zepbound revenue up 184%.

Goldman Sachs particularly focused on several top investor concerns: GLP-1 pricing dynamics have remained stable, and the insurance policy decision by pharmacy giant CVS to prioritize Novo Nordisk’s Wegovy over Lilly’s Zepbound has not led to significant price erosion.

"Management said that GLP-1 pricing dynamics are fully in line with their expectations, and after CVS recently decided to prioritize Novo Nordisk’s Wegovy over Zepbound, they have not seen any significant price erosion."

Oral Weight-Loss Drug Orforglipron: A Transformative Product About To Debut

Goldman Sachs considers Lilly’s oral weight-loss candidate orforglipron to be "one of the most important new product cycles in the entire biopharmaceutical universe." Management revealed that global regulatory submissions are about to start, and the drug is expected to launch in the U.S. market for obesity treatment next year.

Even more noteworthy, this drug meets at least three out of four FDA National Priority Review Voucher requirements, paving the way for accelerated approval.

In terms of pricing strategy, Lilly sees orforglipron as following a sales model similar to Zepbound, focusing on using the LillyDirect direct-to-consumer platform. Management emphasized that the convenience of an oral formulation will significantly expand the size of the global target market.

"Management pointed out that orforglipron's overall profile (weight loss efficacy, superiority over Novo Nordisk’s oral semaglutide for diabetes, cardiovascular/anti-inflammatory benefits, and once-daily dosing without food or water restrictions) creates a generational opportunity to tap into a global target market much larger than that targeted by their current incretin portfolio."

Pipeline Strategy: From Weight Loss To Cardiovascular Expansion

In addition to the GLP-1 product line, Lilly is also excelling in next-generation obesity compounds. Phase II data for the selective amylin receptor agonist eloralintide will soon be released at Obesity Week, and results from six phase III trials of the triple agonist retatrutide are expected by the end of 2026.

Notably, Lilly’s newly disclosed Lp(a) project, muvalaplin, has entered phase III clinical trials—a new and emerging field in cardiovascular therapeutics that is drawing strong investor attention. Phase II data shows that the drug can reduce biomarker levels by more than 85% at maximum dosage compared to placebo.

Based on rolling valuation adjustments, Goldman Sachs maintains a 26.0x P/E ratio, and considers Lilly to be in the best position prior to orforglipron’s 2026 launch. For this pharmaceutical giant sitting atop the GLP-1 competition, any early regulatory approval would be an added bonus for performance.

Lilly’s target price is raised from $879 to $951 (90% above the current share price), with a reiterated Buy rating.
