EU Warning: The Situation in Iran May Lead to "Long-Term Disruption" of Energy; Member States Need to Be Prepared
```
The European Union is issuing its highest level warning about the impact of the Iran war on the energy market and is urging member states to immediately activate emergency preparations.
According to a letter obtained by Reuters, EU Energy Commissioner Dan Jorgensen sent a letter to energy ministers of member states on March 30, warning governments to prepare in advance for the possible "long-term disruption" of energy markets.
The letter was sent on the eve of an emergency meeting scheduled for this Tuesday, highlighting the EU's heightened vigilance concerning the current situation.
Since the US and Israel launched war against Iran on February 28, European natural gas prices have risen by more than 70%. In the letter, Dan Jorgensen specifically pointed out that in the short term, what worries the EU most is the security of supply for refined oil products such as aviation fuel and diesel in Europe.
Hormuz Strait blockade impacts supply of refined products
Europe's heavy reliance on imported fuels makes it highly susceptible to the ripple effects on global energy prices caused by Middle East conflicts.
Although the EU mainly imports crude oil and natural gas from regions outside the Middle East, the closure of the crucial shipping channel, the Hormuz Strait, has not yet directly impacted EU crude oil and natural gas supplies. However, the supply chains of refined oil products are under more immediate pressure.
The EU demands member states take multiple countermeasures
Dan Jorgensen urged all member state governments to avoid any measures that would increase fuel consumption, restrict trade in oil products, or suppress the output of European refineries.
The letter also specifically stated that all member states should postpone non-essential refinery maintenance to ensure existing refinery capacity is fully utilized and the continued supply of refined products is guaranteed.
