Goldman Sachs’ chief lawyer embroiled in “Epstein scandal,” affectionately calling him “Uncle Epstein,” and receiving a Hermès gift.
With the latest batch of Epstein files declassified by the U.S. Department of Justice, details of an old relationship have been brought back into the public eye.
On January 31 local time, according to Bloomberg and a large number of newly disclosed, declassified documents from the U.S. Department of Justice, details of the relationship between Kathy Ruemmler, current Goldman Sachs partner and general counsel, and Jeffrey Epstein have been thoroughly exposed.
“Uncle Jeffrey” and Hermes Gifts
Before Ruemmler became the top legal officer at Goldman Sachs, her interactions with Epstein were highly personal. Emails show that between 2016 and 2019, she repeatedly referred to Epstein as "Uncle Jeffrey."
In a 2019 email, she wrote: "Today I'm totally armed by Uncle Jeffrey! Jeffrey boots, handbag, and watch!"
The gift list is extremely detailed. In 2018, Epstein offered to buy a strap for her Apple Watch. She also received handbags, flowers, and fine wine from Epstein as gifts.
The disclosed emails show:
In 2016, 2018, and 2019, Ruemmler used the nickname "Uncle Jeffrey" in emails multiple timesShe thanked Epstein in emails for gifts including shoes, handbags, watches, and alcoholic beveragesIn an email on Halloween in 2018, Epstein replied to her: "good girl"

Drafted “PR Scripts” for Trump
According to the declassified documents, Ruemmler was not only a social confidante of Epstein, but also provided him with "strategic support" in the political and public relations spheres.
During the 2016 U.S. presidential election, Epstein anticipated that Trump would be asked about their relationship, and consulted Ruemmler for advice. Ruemmler promptly suggested Trump should respond:
"I met Epstein in a professional setting and always had pleasant interactions with him. Other than what’s reported in the media, I know nothing about his personal legal issues, so I have no comment."
Wall Street and the Intersection of Power
Ruemmler previously served as White House counsel under Obama, returned to law practice in 2014, and joined Goldman Sachs in 2020. These documents clearly depict how Epstein relied on top elites like Ruemmler to maintain his social status.
Records show Epstein’s social circle was vast and interconnected: On one day in January 2016, his schedule included “breakfast with Marc Rowan, co-founder of Apollo Global Management, lunch with Ruemmler, and dinner with Woody Allen and his wife.” He also introduced Ruemmler to Steve Bannon, former senior advisor to Trump who just left the White House.
Goldman Sachs Responds: Support Unchanged, Limited Impact
Despite the startling details in the documents, Goldman Sachs senior management’s attitude is currently resolute.
Goldman Sachs spokesperson Tony Fratto said that friendly professional interaction is normal, these emails will not alter her role at the company. “As CEO Solomon has said, Kathy is an outstanding general counsel, and we benefit from her counsel every day.”
Solomon has also repeatedly affirmed internally, calling her a “very excellent lawyer,” and emphasized that when related information was initially disclosed in 2023, Ruemmler had truthfully reported to the company.
