Google has been striving to catch up with OpenAI’s lead in the field of generative artificial intelligence. Now, it seems the company is finally making progress in expanding its user base.

This week, Google's Gemini app topped the free app charts on Apple’s App Store, surpassing ChatGPT, which sparked the generative AI boom almost three years ago.

Google’s Gemini AI model recently received some updates, attracting a large influx of new users. Last month, Google launched an upgraded “Flash” AI model—2.5 Flash Image—which added a new image editing feature called Nano Banana. The app allows users to merge multiple photos together and generate content via prompts, such as turning uploaded photos into digital avatars.

According to a post by Gemini app lead Josh Woodward on social media last week, this product brought 13 million new users to the Gemini app. Users have uploaded 500 million images to the Gemini app. In another post, Woodward stated that due to excessive demand, their team had to temporarily set usage limits over the weekend.

As of July, which was the time of the company’s last data disclosure, Google CEO Sundar Pichai stated in the company’s Q2 earnings report that the Gemini app had over 450 million monthly active users.

Google's improved performance in the consumer AI space has also drawn attention from investors.

On Monday, Google’s parent company Alphabet became the fourth member of the $3 trillion market capitalization club, joining NVIDIA, Microsoft, and Apple. Alphabet’s stock price has risen 33% this year, compared to a 16% rise in the Nasdaq index over the same period.

Earlier this month, Google also benefited from a favorable antitrust ruling, which allowed Google to retain its Chrome browser.
