GPT-6 Astra launches in disarray: Paid users are "turned away," and Altman issues an emergency apology.

OpenAI’s latest flagship model, GPT-6 Astra, has been embroiled in controversy since its release.

As reported by Wall Street News , on Thursday, September 3rd, Eastern Time, OpenAI officially released its new generation flagship model, GPT-6 Astra, calling it a "generational leap".

However, CEO Sam Altman issued a public apology within hours of the launch, admitting it was a "chaotic launch" and leaving many paid subscribers unable to use the model immediately after a long wait. This is yet another instance of OpenAI's major product launches failing in recent years.

OpenAI has adopted a phased release strategy, prioritizing access for specific enterprise customers, namely users connected to its Daybreak cybersecurity platform. Other Plus, Pro, Business, and Enterprise subscribers, as well as users accessing the platform through the OpenAI API, Microsoft Azure, and AWS Bedrock, will have to wait "in the coming days."

This arrangement quickly sparked strong dissatisfaction among paid users, especially those on the high-priced Pro plan who were accustomed to having priority access to new product launches.

As of press time, neither Altman nor other OpenAI employees have provided a clear timeline for expanding access. Altman posted on the X platform that he "hopes" users will be able to use Astra by the end of this week, but "cannot promise at this time."

The phased release strategy has triggered a strong backlash from paying users.

The release of Astra was fraught with problems from the very beginning due to issues with prioritization.

According to OpenAI's plan, enterprise customers, especially those using the Daybreak cybersecurity platform, will be granted access first, while Pro plan users, who pay higher monthly fees, will have to wait in line.

This is a significant departure from the user expectations that OpenAI had previously established: Pro program users have long been seen as "first beneficiaries of new features." The announcement posted by OpenAI employees on the X platform was quickly flooded with numerous complaints and comments.

Altman responded in a post on the X platform, saying...

We are doing everything we can to make Astra available to everyone as soon as possible. I know it's frustrating, but thank you for your patience. It shouldn't be too long.

The launch of Astra wasn't just hampered by user access issues. Altman admitted that there were some "minor hiccups" during the blog post launch process.

At the same time, OpenAI also faces strong criticism from security advocates. The crux of the controversy lies in OpenAI's admission that Astra's inference process is more difficult to monitor than other models.

This feature is considered particularly concerning given that OpenAI's AI agent previously attacked Hugging Face, and key details of the attack were disclosed through such surveillance methods. OpenAI stated that it delayed the release of Astra by several weeks to strengthen security features following this vulnerability.

However, the delayed release did not make the launch smoother; instead, it added the double burden of access chaos and security concerns.

Major releases have repeatedly suffered setbacks, becoming a persistent problem for OpenAI.

This incident is not the first major setback for OpenAI.

Altman stated last year, when reviewing the release of GPT-5:

I think we completely messed up some parts of the release process.

The GPT-5 was also plagued by technical problems when it was launched, and the decision to temporarily remove the popular GPT-4o model caused a huge uproar.

Astra's experience mirrors the previous examples: high-profile pre-launch hype, ambitious positioning, followed by chaotic execution and a public apology.

This model is eroding user trust and creating opportunities for competitors as the paid subscription user base continues to grow.
