Hassett criticizes Powell: His continued tenure at the Federal Reserve is highly unusual and hinders Trump from appointing a new candidate.

White House National Economic Council Director Kevin Hassett criticized former Federal Reserve Chair Jerome Powell for remaining at the U.S. central bank, saying this move has hindered the Trump administration from appointing new board members.
In an interview on Thursday, Hassett said:
"Powell's decision not to step down is a highly unusual situation. For a former chairman to continue sitting in that position is really abnormal."
Hassett made the above remarks when asked if there were any specific Fed members about whom he was concerned. The previous day, he said on Fox Business:
"The majority of people inside the Fed may not be voting out of patriotism, but because they want to target Trump."
As Federal Reserve policymakers have repeatedly refused to make the deep rate cuts President Trump demands, and last month decided to keep the benchmark rate unchanged, tensions between the two sides have continued to rise.
Currently, in the Fed Board, since the start of Trump’s second term, he has only managed to appoint one member—a new chairman, Walsh. Powell’s term as a Fed Governor will last until January 2028, and he has previously stated he will not step down for the time being.
In April this year, Powell said he would "leave when he feels it is appropriate," citing concerns that investigations into the Fed’s HQ building project might be politically motivated.
Hassett said: "I am concerned about his motives." He said on Wednesday, "We have to closely watch this matter." But on Thursday he added: "Ultimately, this is an issue for Walsh to resolve."
When asked whether it was necessary to investigate Powell, Hassett replied:
"The Fed needs to do its job well. They have a great leadership team, and we hope everything works out in the end."
