Head of Russian sovereign fund @Musk: Build a "Bering Strait tunnel" to connect Russia and the US

Kirill Dmitriev, head of the Russian sovereign wealth fund, proposed on social media that Elon Musk’s Boring Company build an undersea tunnel beneath the Bering Strait connecting Russia and Alaska, to be named the "Putin-Trump Tunnel." This proposal came after Trump and Putin had a phone conversation earlier this week. He packaged the tunnel as a "landmark project" that could signal a possible thaw in U.S.-Russia relations, noting that the two countries' leaders would meet soon in Budapest, Hungary.

The project proposed by Dmitriev would be 70 miles long, with traditional technology estimated to cost $65 billion. He claims that, using Boring Company's technology, the project could be completed in eight years at a cost of $8 billion. The Russian sovereign fund head said it could reshape the structure of global supply chains.

Notably, he has posted about this project several times on the social media platform X. He cited declassified Soviet documents from the Kennedy era, saying that at the time there was already the concept of building a "World Peace Bridge" between Alaska and Russia, stating that "it should be built immediately."

This large-scale infrastructure project may attract Trump’s interest, but it will also face strong opposition domestically in the United States. It is expected that neoconservatives and Democrats will protest the project. The project also involves sensitive issues in the geopolitics of energy.
