Iran makes final decision on new Supreme Leader candidate

According to a report by Xinhua News Agency citing Iranian media on the 8th, Iran's Assembly of Experts has made a final decision on the new Supreme Leader candidate.

The report has not yet disclosed specific information about Iran's new Supreme Leader.

Earlier, Xinhua News Agency cited a statement released by the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps of Iran on the 7th, reporting that a member of the Assembly of Experts said the meeting to elect Iran's Supreme Leader would be held within the next 24 hours. The Assembly of Experts is the highest authority responsible for electing, supervising, and removing Iran's Supreme Leader.

On March 7 local time, CCTV reporters learned that U.S. President Trump stated he hopes to participate in the selection of Iran’s next leader, and said he does not want the United States to “have to face the same problem again every five or ten years.”

On the 5th, Trump stated that he “must personally participate” in choosing Iran’s next leader. That day he said he would not accept the son of Iran’s late Supreme Leader Khamenei as Iran’s new leader. He stated, “I must personally participate in the appointment.”
