Iranian Foreign Minister says negotiations can only resume if the US is sincere; Trump says the US-Iran ceasefire is a favor to the Palestinians and threatens to destroy Iranian facilities.
The ceasefire and diplomatic efforts between the US and Iran are facing a severe test. Iranian Foreign Minister Araghchi publicly stated that Iran has "no trust in the US," warning that the US must take matters seriously; otherwise, Iran will not be willing to resume negotiations. US President Trump declared that the ceasefire with Iran was just a favor for Pakistan, and threatened that the US could destroy Iran's infrastructure within two days.
According to CCTV, on Friday the 15th local time, Araghchi stated at a BRICS foreign ministers' press conference that negotiations aimed at ending the war between Iran and the US are still stalled. Pakistan's mediation process has not failed but encountered "difficulties"—Iran has "no trust in the US," and only if the US adopts a serious attitude will Iran be interested in negotiating.
On Friday, Trump spoke tough during an interview aboard the presidential plane "Air Force One." According to Xinhua, Trump said he did not support the US ceasefire with Iran—the ceasefire was "at the request of other countries," and, in his words, "to do Pakistan a favor." Trump reiterated that the proposal from Iran was "unacceptable" and threatened that the US could "destroy their bridges and power facilities," and "paralyze their entire system within two days."
The above statements have made the market highly alert to the uncertainty in the Middle East. The safety of passage through the Strait of Hormuz has again become a focus—a tense situation in this globally important energy transport route will directly affect oil price trends and the stability of the global supply chain.
Iranian Foreign Minister: "No trust" in the US; Seriousness as prerequisite for negotiation; Iran does not seek to develop nuclear weapons
According to CCTV, at the BRICS foreign ministers' press conference on the 15th, Araghchi clearly stated that Iran is trying to maintain the ceasefire and give diplomacy a chance, but is also prepared to "return to the battlefield." He emphasized that Iran has "no trust in the US," and only if the US is serious will Iran be interested in conducting negotiations.
Araghchi pointed out that the "contradictory messages" from the US make it impossible for Iran to judge its true intention for negotiation, which is one of the key reasons for the stalled talks. He also stated that Pakistan's mediation process has not failed but faced "difficulties."
According to Xinhua quoting Iranian media, Araghchi stated clearly that Iran does not seek to develop nuclear weapons.
On the previous day, Araghchi had already expressed a tough stance. According to CCTV News, during the BRICS foreign ministers' conference on Thursday, he said that any issue relating to Iran does not have a so-called "military solution," Iran "never succumbs to any pressure or threat," and is prepared to fight to defend freedom and territory, but is also ready to resolve issues through diplomatic means.
Trump: Unacceptable for Iran to possess any form of nuclear weapons; US can paralyze Iran's system in two days
According to CCTV, Xinhua and other media, Trump stated during an interview on "Air Force One" on the 15th that he personally did not support the US ceasefire with Iran; the ceasefire was a decision "at the request of other countries." "I didn't actually agree (to the ceasefire), but we did it to help Pakistan; they are great people."
According to reports, in the interview Trump also mentioned Pakistan's Army Chief of Staff and Prime Minister, saying "We did the ceasefire for Pakistan; they are extraordinary people."
On the nuclear issue, Trump was equally tough. According to CCTV News, he stated Iran's proposal was "unacceptable," "If I don't like the first sentence, I just throw it away," and clearly stated that if Iran possessed any form of nuclear weapons, he would not continue reading any proposal. Meanwhile, he threatened, "We can destroy their bridges and power facilities. In two days, we can paralyze their whole system."
According to US media, regarding the proposal to suspend Iran's nuclear project for 20 years, Trump stated on Friday, "Feels okay," but the precondition is that the Iranian government must make a "genuine" commitment.
Based on the current news, substantive progress in the US-Iran nuclear negotiations remains very limited. Differences on trust, negotiating conditions, and regional control remain difficult to bridge in the short term.
US and Iran take opposing positions on control of the Strait of Hormuz; Disputes escalate
According to US media, Trump declared during an interview on "Air Force One" that the US holds control over the Strait of Hormuz and claimed that the US has "basically destroyed their (Iran's) armed forces."
Trump said: "We control the strait; they (Iran) haven't done any business... We are performing very well in every aspect." He also stated that the current blockade by the US is "very effective," which is one of the reasons the ceasefire was achieved.
The Iranian side, however, offered a starkly different version.
According to Xinhua quoting Iranian media, Araghchi stated at a press conference in New Delhi on the 15th that the Strait of Hormuz is open, and all ships may pass, except for those from hostile countries; commercial ships from friendly countries "only need to coordinate with the Iranian military" to pass.
Araghchi also said that the situation around the Strait of Hormuz is "very complex," and reiterated that the strait should be jointly managed by Iran and Oman.
