Juzibio obtains Class III medical device certification for recombinant collagen, potentially challenging Jinbo's exclusive position.

The market for recombinant collagen injection materials is welcoming more players.
On October 23, Giant Bio (2367.HK) announced that its Class III medical device "Recombinant Type I alpha subtype collagen lyophilized fiber" has been approved for market by the drug administration. Its indication is dermal tissue filling of the face to correct forehead dynamic wrinkles, including glabellar lines, forehead lines, and crow's feet.
Specifically, Giant Bio’s product is composed of recombinant type I alpha subtype collagen, selecting amino acid sequences from position 305 to 1057 of the human natural type I alpha1 single chain, totaling 753 amino acids, and does not possess a triple-helix structure.
According to Giant Bio’s explanation to Xinfeng, type I collagen mainly provides support and elasticity in the skin.
"Collagen accounts for about 25-35% of the total protein content in the human body, and type I collagen accounts for 80-90% of all collagen in the human body. About 80% of the collagen in the skin is type I, making it the most abundant in the skin, and type I collagen provides the main support and elasticity in the skin," Giant Bio said. "The natural-sequence collagen we have been approved for uses a sequence consistent with human collagen, covering all functional domains of type I collagen, without any modification (such as splicing or repetition). Experiments have shown it has low immunological risk, high biocompatibility, high safety, and biological functions close to human collagen."
This may break the "single-dominance" situation of Jinbo Bio (920982.BJ).
Previously, only Jinbo Bio in China had obtained a class III certificate for recombinant collagen injection materials, which became a major factor in its booming performance—revenue reached 1.443 billion yuan in 2024, an increase of over 80% year-on-year.
However, the material composition of the two companies is slightly different.
Giant Bio's product belongs to recombinant type I collagen, whereas Jinbo Bio’s core material is recombinant type III collagen, which has a triple-helix structure.
According to an industry insider in Beijing’s medical aesthetics field, type I collagen is mainly responsible for support structure, and type III collagen is mainly responsible for elastic repair.
But in terms of approved indications, there is no difference between the two.
The approved indication for Jinbo Bio's "Injectable Recombinant Type III Humanized Collagen Solution" is "for dermal tissue filling of the face to correct forehead dynamic wrinkles (including glabellar lines, forehead lines, and crow's feet)."
It is foreseeable that as the number of recombinant collagen products with "Class III" certification increases, market competition may become more intense.
