Microsoft announces integration of AI services into Office, going head-to-head with ChatGPT.

According to media reports, Microsoft is integrating its consumer-oriented AI subscription service into Office products, betting that the widespread use of Office will help the company gain an advantage in competition with OpenAI's ChatGPT.

On Wednesday, Microsoft announced it will launch a more expensive new Microsoft 365 subscription plan. This plan will add integrated chatbot and image generation AI features to existing Office applications such as Word, Excel, Outlook, and others.

Yusuf Mehdi, Chief Marketing Officer of Microsoft's consumer division, said in a media interview that users currently paying for the Copilot Pro chatbot will be migrated to this new plan in the future. Copilot Pro is currently a service available on mobile devices and the web.

Since establishing a partnership with OpenAI, Microsoft has rapidly incorporated AI features into its product line. However, the two companies are increasingly competing for users.

Currently, Microsoft’s personal Copilot app is directly challenging market leader ChatGPT. Meanwhile, OpenAI is continuing to expand its influence in the enterprise market, which is Microsoft's main source of revenue.

In January this year, Microsoft began offering AI features to individual users and raised subscription prices for the original Office suite. However, users encountered usage limits when trying functions such as image generation or editing.

Microsoft's new "Microsoft 365 Premium" advanced plan will be priced at $19.99 per month, one cent less than ChatGPT Plus and the soon-to-be-discontinued Copilot Pro. This plan will include Microsoft's AI research assistant features, more image generation credits, and other tools already available to enterprise customers.

For users whose companies have not purchased the Copilot service, premium subscribers can also bring these AI features to their work environment, such as using Copilot to edit documents or organize emails. Mehdi stated:

"So many people are now bringing AI into their work, and we finally have a product that I think is better for them."

Microsoft will continue to offer the standard Microsoft 365 personal subscription at $10 per month, or a family plan at $13 per month. The productivity software versions Microsoft sells to enterprise customers will not be affected by these changes.

Mehdi said that Microsoft currently has about 90 million paying individual Microsoft 365 subscribers. However, he declined to disclose how many people are paying for Copilot Pro.
