Microsoft is accelerating the expansion of its AI infrastructure landscape, taking in the “abandoned projects” of its competitors.
According to Bloomberg, citing sources, Microsoft has agreed to lease a data center project in Texas, which was originally developed by Oracle and OpenAI, but both companies eventually abandoned related negotiations. This move gives Microsoft another victory in the AI data center race.
The project is located in the city of Abilene, with a capacity of about 700 MW, adjacent to Oracle and OpenAI’s flagship “Stargate” campus. According to Bloomberg, Microsoft reached this deal with developer Crusoe. With Microsoft moving in, the campus will now host both Microsoft and Oracle, two major competitors.
Oracle and OpenAI Negotiations Break Down, Microsoft Takes Over
According to Bloomberg earlier this month, negotiations between Oracle and OpenAI for the Abilene project stalled due to financing disputes and OpenAI’s frequently changing requirements, eventually breaking down. OpenAI subsequently stated that it would turn to other data centers.
Citing sources, Bloomberg also reported that Meta Platforms had previously explored leasing the site. Earlier, The Information reported that Microsoft was in talks regarding lease agreements. Ultimately, Microsoft reached a deal with developer Crusoe.
Microsoft Accelerates Data Center Expansion
This deal is a snapshot of Microsoft’s recent large-scale expansion of its cloud computing and AI infrastructure.
In the most recent quarter, Microsoft signed about $50 billion in data center lease commitments to meet the needs of cloud computing customers and internal AI research and development. This intensive layout marks a clear strategic shift for Microsoft (about a year ago, the company had paused multiple data center projects).
After the deal is completed, the Abilene campus will feature Microsoft and Oracle coexisting in the same large-scale complex, while both companies are rivals in the cloud computing and AI markets. Currently, Oracle has rapidly deployed servers in the campus, providing computing power support for OpenAI’s model training and product deployment.
