Musk admits to falling behind; xAI launches its first programming agent, targeting industry leader Claude Code.

Musk’s xAI is striving to catch up with competitors in the AI programming race, but ongoing talent loss continues to trouble this startup.
On Thursday, May 14, xAI released its first AI programming agent, Grok Build, challenging Anthropic’s Claude. This product is currently in early testing and only available to paid subscribers.
xAI President Michael Nicolls has clearly set “reaching Claude’s task performance level” as a near-term company goal.
Programming is one of the most promising subdivisions for AI commercialization. Elon Musk himself has admitted that xAI has fallen behind competitors in this field. The launch of Grok Build marks the company’s official entry into the professional programming market.
Product Positioning: A Terminal Programming Tool for Professional Developers
Grok Build is delivered as a command-line interface (CLI) tool, running directly on users’ terminals and initially open to SuperGrok Heavy subscribers.

According to the xAI official website, this agent can complete complex programming tasks according to user instructions, and supports a “Plan Mode”—users can review, comment on, or even rewrite the task plan before execution. All code changes are presented in diff format, making it easy for developers to track progress.
Another core feature is the parallel sub-agent mechanism: for larger tasks, Grok Build can split the work and assign it to multiple specialized sub-agents to execute simultaneously, with support for deep code repository integration (worktree integration).

Additionally, the tool is compatible with existing AGENTS.md configurations, plugins, hooks, and MCP servers, reducing migration costs for developers.

xAI says that the headless mode allows embedding agents into scripts and automated workflows. Full ACP protocol support is also provided, allowing developers to build custom bots and agent orchestration applications.
Fierce Competition in the AI Programming Track
AI programming is currently recognized as a high-value market in the entire AI industry, with Anthropic’s Claude widely regarded as the industry benchmark in this subdivision.
xAI’s entry will intensify competition. However, Grok Build is still in early stage testing, and its actual performance and stability remain to be validated by the market.
xAI says it will continue to iterate the product based on user feedback. A /feedback command is available in the CLI for users to submit suggestions directly to the team.
For investors, whether xAI can truly compete head-on with Claude under the dual pressures of talent instability and rapid product iteration will be a key factor in tracking the company’s development trajectory.
Catching Up with Competitors as Internal Restructuring Proceeds
xAI’s move into AI programming is part of a broader company restructuring plan.
Musk is reshaping xAI’s image and capabilities ahead of the parent company SpaceX’s IPO. Restructuring measures include layoffs, new partnerships, and large-scale hiring to fill vacancies left by founding member departures.
On the cooperation front, xAI signed an agreement last month with AI programming tool company Cursor, covering programming capability collaboration and compute resource sharing. According to Bloomberg, Cursor engineers have recently started working with the xAI team.
However, the pressure of talent loss has not dissipated.
According to Bloomberg, several core engineers in xAI’s Palo Alto office have recently left, including Devendra Chaplot—Mistral AI co-founder who only joined in March this year—and Beibin Li, who led the post-training team.
