Court documents and email evidence released on Tuesday local time show that as early as 2016, Elon Musk had advised OpenAI co-founder Sam Altman to choose Microsoft instead of Amazon as a cloud computing partner.

In the email, Musk bluntly stated that he thought Amazon CEO Jeff Bezos was "a bit too clever for his own good," and had a better impression of Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella, although he also expressed dissatisfaction with Microsoft's marketing department. Altman replied that Amazon was "playing games" with them over cooperation terms, especially regarding marketing commitments, and pointed out that Amazon's products weren't great technically anyway.

Also made public on Tuesday, Nadella's testimony revealed that after Altman's sudden dismissal at the end of 2023, the entire tech industry fiercely competed for OpenAI's core talent, and one of Nadella's main goals at the time was "to ensure they didn't start afresh by founding a new rival AI lab."

Nadella disclosed that Google co-founder Sergey Brin had directly contacted OpenAI co-founder Greg Brockman. He said, “Altman and Brockman virtually received calls from everyone, including Google CEO Sundar Pichai, Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg, and in some cases even Elon Musk.”

According to text messages read out at the hearing, then OpenAI CTO Mira Murati wrote after Altman was dismissed, “Nadella says he’s soothing Sam, hoping he won’t make a highly competitive move,” such as founding a new AI company.
