Musk "spends big to make up for shortcomings"! SpaceX reaches agreement with "AI programming rising star" Cursor: has the right to acquire for $60 billion
```
SpaceX has reached an agreement with AI programming startup Cursor, giving it the right to acquire Cursor for $60 billion later this year, or pay $10 billion to advance their collaboration. This is the latest move by Musk’s companies to catch up with competitors in the AI programming sector.
SpaceX announced the deal in a post on the X platform, stating that the two companies are "working closely to jointly build the world's strongest AI for programming and knowledge work."
Previously, Musk publicly admitted that xAI was lagging behind its peers in programming tools, and in March of this year ordered layoffs at xAI. SpaceX itself is also planning to launch an IPO later this year, and recently completed a merger with xAI.
Before this deal was reached, according to a previous article from WallstreetCN, Cursor was negotiating with investors for a new round of financing, aiming to raise about $2 billion at a valuation of over $50 billion (excluding this investment), with Nvidia and Andreessen Horowitz both planning to participate in the round.
Acquiring Cursor to Fill AI Programming Gaps
In February this year,SpaceX acquiredMusk’s AI company xAI. Meanwhile, Musk has repeatedly expressed dissatisfaction publicly with xAI’s capabilities in programming tools, and initiated large-scale recruitment of engineering talent. He personally poached talent from Cursor, showing recognition of the company’s technical strength.
This agreement with Cursor was reached against this backdrop.
Cursor President Oskar Schulz said that the SpaceX team "possesses vast computing resources, and we believe our cooperation can greatly expand the scale of model research and development, and we are very much looking forward to it. We also highly appreciate their team."
Cursor’s AI assistant was officially launched in 2023, mainly helping programmers write and debug code more efficiently. With its core position in the vibe coding wave, Cursor has become one of the fastest-growing startups ever, accumulating a strong user base among software developers.
The AI programming tools market is experiencing intense competition from multiple sides. Anthropic, OpenAI, and many startups are continuously launching new products. SpaceX’s move to acquire Cursor is intended to leverage Cursor’s mature product capabilities and user base to quickly narrow the gap with competitors in this field.
