Mythos is revolutionizing "cybersecurity," with pilot companies calling for "the protection of critical infrastructure."

Anthropic’s latest AI model, Mythos, is reshaping the cybersecurity landscape. Its powerful vulnerability detection abilities bring defensive value but also have triggered deep concerns about security risks for critical infrastructure.
On April 25, according to the UK's Financial Times, companies with access to Mythos reported that the Mythos AI model is driving a spike in software updates, which could expose national critical infrastructure to hacker attacks.
Participating companies warn that relying solely on commercial institutions is far from sufficient. "Joint action across public and private sectors" is a necessary prerequisite for protecting critical infrastructure such as hospitals, banks, and utilities.
Jeetu Patel, President and Chief Product Officer of Cisco Technology Group, stated:
My understanding is that the world is divided into before Mythos and after Mythos.
This week, Anthropic also revealed it is investigating reports of a batch of users accessing Mythos without authorization via third-party channels, raising further concerns about the model’s risk of proliferation.
Central banks, financial institutions, and regulators have recently demanded faster access to Mythos, but Anthropic refused to provide a timeline.
"Pre-Mythos Era" and "Post-Mythos Era"
Earlier this month, Anthropic officially launched Mythos, highlighting its ability to "detect cybersecurity vulnerabilities faster than humans."
Currently, the model is available for trial at about 40 institutions, mainly American companies including Amazon, Microsoft, and major banks such as JPMorgan Chase.
Jeetu Patel, Cisco's President and Chief Product Officer, is one of the few executives granted access. He summed up the historic significance of this technology with a concise contrast:
My understanding is, there is a world before Mythos, and a world after Mythos.
Patel pointed out that operators of critical infrastructure face especially prominent threats. These systems generally run older versions of software with limited upgrading capabilities and are seen as high-value attack targets. He said:
The challenge with patching is that you sometimes have to shut down systems, and most organizations cannot afford downtime, so they update according to planned, fixed time windows.
Bryan Preston, CFO of Fifth Third Bank, stated that since the release of Mythos, its technology provider Microsoft has pushed nearly 150 software updates.
Flood of Patches: Defensive Gains and Operational Pressure Coexist
Mythos’s vulnerability detection brings defensive gains, but also new operational challenges.
Haider Pasha, Vice President and Chief Security Officer for Palo Alto Networks in Europe, the Middle East, and Africa, stated: The volume of vulnerabilities identified by this model could trigger a massive wave of patches, putting pressure on stable operation of business systems.
Multiple cybersecurity experts suggest software developers should make choices when issuing updates to avoid overwhelming customers.
While defensive capabilities improve, the cutting-edge AI technology represented by Mythos also offers new tools for attackers.
Palo Alto Networks warns that this technology will quickly spread beyond models built by US tech companies with guardrails against malicious use, potentially enabling hackers to "develop autonomous attack agents never seen before in the industry."
Pasha further pointed out, The standout ability of frontier models like Mythos is to chain multiple vulnerabilities together to bypass security protection systems, making its potential threats far greater than previous tools.
