OpenAI acquires Mac AI interface developer

OpenAI is accelerating the deep integration of AI features into tools used by people in their daily lives. On Thursday, OpenAI announced the acquisition of Software Applications, a company that developed the AI interface product Sky specifically for Apple computers. According to a company blog post, all 12 employees of Software Applications will join OpenAI. The startup was founded in 2023, and OpenAI CEO Sam Altman participated in its $6.5 million seed round funding. This acquisition will bring Sky’s macOS integration technology into the ChatGPT product line. Earlier this year, Software Applications released the AI assistant Sky, designed to help users take action or answer questions. Nick Turley, head of the ChatGPT team, said he was "stunned" when Software Applications CEO Ari Weinstein demonstrated Sky to him. He stated: This feature can turn some of OpenAI's imagined concepts into reality. Product Features and Integration Plan Sky is a natural language interface tool designed specifically for Mac systems. The product can float on the user's desktop to assist with thinking and creation. Its core capability lies in understanding screen content and performing operations through various applications. This deep system integration is its technological highlight. OpenAI plans to incorporate Sky’s deep macOS integration capabilities and product design philosophy into ChatGPT. Nick Turley stated in a release: Sky’s deep integration with Mac accelerates our vision—to bring AI directly into the tools people use every day. Ari Weinstein, co-founder and CEO of Software Applications, said: We’ve always hoped computers could be more empowering, customizable, and intuitive. With large language models, we can finally bring these elements together. Ongoing Acquisition Strategy OpenAI has made a series of acquisitions in recent months. Last September, the company acquired product development startup Statsig for $1.1 billion. In May last year, OpenAI acquired Jony Ive’s AI device startup io for over $6 billion. This acquisition of Software Applications continues OpenAI’s strategy of quickly acquiring technical capabilities and talent through external mergers and acquisitions, especially in integrating AI features into existing operating systems and user workflows. OpenAI said it will gradually release updates about the integration of Sky's features. Risk Warning and Disclaimer The market involves risks, and investment should be cautious.
