OpenAI and Anthropic call for stronger cyber defenses: Enhanced AI capabilities increase the risk of hacker attacks.

Artificial intelligence companies OpenAI and Anthropic, along with more than 100 technology and financial services organizations, have warned that businesses and governments must do more to prepare for and strengthen defenses against AI-driven hacking attacks.

In an open letter released on Thursday, these AI companies, along with Alphabet's Google, Microsoft, and other businesses , called on organizations, governments, and technology and AI companies to "immediately elevate cybersecurity to a leadership priority" and fix existing security vulnerabilities in their software.

The open letter also called on cybersecurity companies to help prevent "AI-driven attacks" and stated that governments should strengthen communication with each other and with industry channels to address potential threats.

The open letter also urged leading AI companies to grant access to AI, as well as funding and training support, to organizations responsible for protecting critical infrastructure.

Cybersecurity incidents involving advanced AI models are occurring frequently.

In July, an incident occurred in which OpenAI's model accidentally compromised Hugging Face. These security incidents have raised concerns about the "out-of-control" nature of AI agents and prompted some technology and government leaders to reiterate calls for restrictions on the technology.

On Wednesday, OpenAI said in a report that the company could have acted sooner to prevent Hugging Face from being hacked.

The signatories of the open letter anticipate that in the coming months, as companies continue to develop AI models that can both defend against and launch cyberattacks, these models will be used to carry out increasingly sophisticated cyberattacks.

The open letter states, "Today's advancements in AI have provided defenders with new tools to patch security vulnerabilities that have accumulated over the years. If we act decisively, we can make our digital world more secure."
