OpenAI enters "AI Healthcare": ChatGPT Health analyzes test results, provides dietary and exercise guidance

OpenAI launched ChatGPT Health on Wednesday, allowing users to securely connect their medical records and health apps to this AI chatbot. This marks the company’s official entry into the healthcare sector, aiming to turn ChatGPT into a “personal super assistant” that covers all aspects of users’ lives. Data from OpenAI shows that over 230 million people ask health and wellness questions on its platform each week, highlighting the huge demand of the healthcare market. The newly launched ChatGPT Health is not intended for diagnosis or treatment and cannot replace medical care, but aims to help users handle daily health issues and make ChatGPT’s responses more relevant by integrating users’ personal health information. ChatGPT Health will create a dedicated space within the chatbot, where all files, conversations, and connected apps will be stored separately from other chat records. OpenAI promises that these conversations will not be used to train its underlying models, and information and memories within the health space will not be shared externally. This feature will first be available to a small group of early users for feedback collection and will widen its access in the coming weeks. OpenAI has partnered with health data connectivity provider b.well, and users can also connect services such as Apple Health, MyFitnessPal, Weight Watchers, and testing startup Function. Independent Health Space Protects Privacy ChatGPT Health has created a dedicated, independent area within the chatbot to separate health-related conversations from users’ other chats. If users start a health topic outside the health section, the AI will prompt them to switch to the specialized health area. This design ensures users’ health backgrounds do not appear in standard conversations. However, the AI in the health space may reference content users have discussed in the standard experience. For instance, if a user has previously asked ChatGPT for help with a marathon training plan, the AI will know they are a runner when discussing fitness goals in the health space. OpenAI’s CEO of Application Business, Fidji Simo, wrote on Substack that ChatGPT Health is another step towards transforming ChatGPT into a personal super assistant capable of providing information and tools for any aspect of users’ lives. Integrating Multiple Health Data Sources Through its partnership with b.well, ChatGPT Health now has health data connectivity infrastructure, allowing users to share medical records. Users can connect various services through the app’s tools or settings. Connectable data sources include Apple Health, MyFitnessPal, Weight Watchers, and testing startup Function. OpenAI stated this product was developed in "close collaboration" with doctors. The company emphasizes that conversations in ChatGPT Health will not be used to train its underlying models, and all health information will be stored and protected separately. Deepening Healthcare Sector Expansion OpenAI has deepened its presence in healthcare over recent months. After launching the GPT-5 model last August, CEO Sam Altman told CNBC that healthcare "may be the area of the most significant improvement among all categories." Last May, the company launched a benchmark called Health Bench to evaluate AI models’ performance in real-world health scenarios. In a blog post, Fidji Simo said she sees ChatGPT Health as a response to existing healthcare system problems, such as cost and barriers to medical care, overloaded appointments, and lack of continuity in care. However, OpenAI clearly states in its terms of service that the product "is not intended for the diagnosis or treatment of any health conditions." Large language models work by predicting the most likely response rather than the most accurate answer and are prone to hallucination, which introduces new challenges when seeking medical advice from AI chatbots.
