OpenAI has reached a preliminary agreement with South Korea’s two major chip giants, Samsung Electronics and SK Hynix, to supply chips and other equipment for its massive Stargate project.
According to statements released Wednesday by Samsung and SK Hynix, OpenAI CEO Sam Altman signed a letter of intent in Seoul. The agreement aims to include these two companies, which dominate the memory chip sector, in the Stargate data center construction plan alongside giants like Nvidia and Oracle.
The potential scale of this partnership is extremely large. According to the statement, as the Stargate project expands globally, total demand from OpenAI could reach 900,000 wafers per month. SK Group emphasized in the statement that this projected demand is more than double the current global high-bandwidth memory (HBM) production capacity, highlighting the project’s huge scale and the rapid momentum of global AI development.
Altman’s visit comes amid a global wave of tech giants investing trillions of dollars to build data centers needed for the next generation of AI tools. These facilities require vast amounts of chips, servers, cooling systems, and electricity.
Consolidating Korean Companies’ Leadership in HBM
SK Hynix is currently the global leader in providing HBM chips required for Nvidia’s AI accelerators, while Samsung Electronics is striving to catch up and become a major supplier. This direct partnership with OpenAI will help consolidate both companies’ leading positions in the field of advanced AI memory chips, putting them in a more favorable position in the global competition with companies like Micron Technology.
Behind this deal is explosive global growth in demand for AI computing power. Companies led by OpenAI and Nvidia are promoting the construction of data centers around the world for the next generation of AI tools. Just last month, Nvidia announced it would invest up to $100 billion in OpenAI to support its new data centers and other infrastructure.
The agreement shows that this collaboration goes far beyond mere chip supply. Other Samsung Group companies, including Samsung SDS, Samsung C&T, and Samsung Heavy Industries, will also partner with OpenAI to explore future technologies. Areas of cooperation include floating data centers and data center design. In addition, SK Group’s SK Telecom will join OpenAI to jointly build a dedicated OpenAI data center in the southwest of South Korea.
This collaboration has also gained support from the South Korean government. As part of the agreement, partners will help Seoul develop an indigenous AI ecosystem. South Korean President Lee Jae-myung stated in a declaration: “I hope Samsung and SK Hynix can work with OpenAI to play a key role in the global prevalence of AI.”
