OpenAI targets Canadian data centers; executives praise Carney's plan.

OpenAI is turning its attention to Canada, viewing it as a significant potential market for data center construction and artificial intelligence development.

On September 15, George Osborne, OpenAI’s country affairs director, said in an interview on the sidelines of the Canada Investment Summit that Canada is “a very important market for OpenAI, with a lot of potential.”

He specifically pointed out that Canada has real opportunities for data center cooperation, thanks to the abundant supply of energy and land resources.

He also gave a positive assessment of the Carney government's artificial intelligence strategy, calling it "one of the clearest AI adoption plans among Western governments," and was impressed by Carney's medium- to long-term plans.

This statement is undoubtedly a strong endorsement for the Canadian government, which is seeking to attract top technology investors.

Policy resolve amid trade disruptions

Osborne served as Chancellor of the Exchequer from 2010 to 2016, experiencing firsthand the trade turmoil surrounding the Brexit referendum and gaining a deep understanding of policy uncertainty.

Osborne attended the event as OpenAI's Head of National Affairs, a position primarily responsible for international liaison. In commenting on the current Canada-US trade friction, he noted:

If you want to understand what's happening in the world, you should come to Canada and see how they're dealing with what Carney calls 'turmoil'.

Despite the short-term pressures brought about by the Canada-US trade war, Osborne believes Carney has demonstrated strategic vision that transcends the immediate situation. Osborne stated:

What I heard from Carney was his ability to look beyond the immediate storm and clearly articulate Canada's medium- to long-term plans. That was impressive.

It is worth mentioning that Osborne has deep ties with Canadian politics; it was during his tenure as Chancellor of the Exchequer that he recommended Carney for the position of Governor of the Bank of England.

The Canada Investment Summit, hosted by Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney, aimed to promote investment opportunities in Canada to top global asset management firms and investors. According to Bloomberg, participating institutions collectively manage over $120 trillion in assets, and attendees came from Australia, Singapore, the United States, and other countries.

The summit focused on infrastructure, including pipelines, ports, and transportation networks, while also exploring investment opportunities in resource sectors such as energy and critical minerals. During the summit, the Canadian government announced expanded tax incentives, which officials characterized as a "game-changer" for investment.
