OpenAI's "AI hardware" is coming! Altman: More peaceful and serene than the iPhone
OpenAI CEO Sam Altman described the company’s upcoming AI hardware device as a product "more peaceful and tranquil than the iPhone." This device is being co-developed by OpenAI and Apple’s former chief designer Jony Ive, and is currently still at the prototype stage, with release expected within two years.
At the 9th annual Demo Day of Emerson Collective in San Francisco, Altman stated that the concept of this device is to break away from the distractions and notifications that modern tech products are filled with. He believes that when people first see the product they will say:
"That’s it? So simple."
This AI device is the result of OpenAI acquiring Ive’s design firm io earlier this year. Reportedly, the product is a screenless, pocket-sized device aiming to bring AI technology to the mass market.
In the interview, Altman also criticized modern devices for feeling like “walking in New York’s Times Square,” full of flashing lights, noise, and all sorts of distractions. The experience shaped by dopamine-chasing social apps and frequent notifications "cannot make our lives peaceful and tranquil, nor allow us to focus on our own business."

Product Positioning: A New Experience Beyond the iPhone
Altman called the iPhone “the pinnacle of consumer products” so far, and said one could define their life by before and after owning an iPhone. But he believes modern technology is full of distractions.
While OpenAI has not yet revealed specific details about the device, both Altman and Ive are keen on describing it with the word "mood."
Sam revealed the “feeling” they are pursuing:
The device must feature a trustworthy AI that understands you long-term.The device has context-awareness: knowing when to disturb you, when not to show content, and when to help filter out noise.Redefining interaction: instead of a bunch of apps, AI serves as the main interface and operating layer.
This kind of device can turn the user experience from “Times Square” into “a cabin by a mountain lake”:
Design Concept: Simple and Intelligent
Jony Ive confirmed at the event that the device will be launched within two years. In his interview with Laurene Powell Jobs, he discussed the design idea:
So simple it’s “almost naive,” removing unnecessary features.Extreme tactile sensation and beauty, making people want to hold it in their hands, even "want to take a bite."Users will use it calmly, fearlessly, with no need to learn. The product is a tool; humans themselves are the main characters.
This description is very reminiscent of Ive’s classic hardware design principles, also hinting that the product will be not screen-centered, minimalist, and physically present.
Earlier this year, OpenAI acquired Ive’s design startup io, aiming to bring AI to the mass market through a technological device. Presently, the product is still in the prototype stage, and further details about its functions and launch timeline are yet to be disclosed.
