On May 28th, at the Open Source HarmonyOS Developer Conference 2026, Zhang Xiaofeng, Executive Chairman of the Open Source HarmonyOS Project Group Work Committee, stated that the development of Open Source HarmonyOS is moving toward a new stage of industrial-scale implementation.

According to data disclosed at the conference, the Open Source HarmonyOS community has surpassed 140 million lines of code, with over 13,000 code contributors and more than 550 community partners. The number of products that have passed compatibility testing has exceeded 1,800, the number of unified interconnected device accesses has surpassed 1 million, and the cross-platform framework supports adaptation for more than 13,000 applications.

From community scale and version evolution to industry applications and AI with embodied intelligence deployment, a series of data and cases show that Open Source HarmonyOS is moving from the early technology verification stage toward true industrial expansion.

The development of Open Source HarmonyOS is inseparable from an open and co-built ecosystem mechanism.

Zhang Xiaofeng mentioned that in recent years, the proportion of non-Huawei developers, non-Huawei code contributions, and non-Huawei Committers in the community has continued to rise.

In terms of technical organization building, the PMC organizational structure of the Open Source HarmonyOS project group continues to improve.

Zhang Xiaofeng revealed that besides OpenHarmony PMC, the Unified Interconnection PMC, Cross-Platform Framework PMC, and Embodied Intelligence PMC have successively begun preparation and construction, further expanding Open Source HarmonyOS's technical layout in device interconnection, application ecosystem, robotics and AI integration.

This conference's pre-release of OpenHarmony 6.1 LTS version is regarded as an important milestone for Open Source HarmonyOS toward scaling up.

Zhang Xiaofeng said that Open Source HarmonyOS has released more than 10 versions, evolving from only supporting lightweight display-less devices to fully supporting complex standard devices with displays, and continuously improving system application capabilities, development experience, AI capabilities, and third-party library support. Open Source HarmonyOS is steadily evolving into a more mature and complete intelligent terminal operating system.

According to reports, the soon-to-be-released 6.1 LTS further strengthens foundational capabilities, providing more comprehensive support for both northbound and southbound ecosystem development: northbound continuously enhances system application and development kit capabilities, while southbound further improves chip adaptation and device access capabilities.

In addition, the 6.1 LTS version's API interfaces are gradually stabilizing, and the workload for version upgrades and development is significantly reduced. Zhang Xiaofeng emphasized that this means ecosystem partners can achieve more efficient development at lower cost during version migration and product evolution.

This is of great significance to the industrial ecosystem. Because only when interfaces are stable and development costs decrease, will device manufacturers and industry clients be truly willing to make long-term investments and large-scale deployments.

Industrial implementation is the most core observation indicator for Open Source HarmonyOS at this stage.

At present, Open Source HarmonyOS has already achieved multiple "X Harmony" benchmark cases in industries such as energy, transportation, and telecom operators, including Southern Power Grid's "Dianhong", China Mobile's "Yihong", Shenzhen Metro's "Jiaohong", and the gas industry's "Ranhong".

On the consumer ecosystem side, Open Source HarmonyOS is also extending further toward "full scenario collaboration". Currently, HarmonyOS devices built based on Open Source HarmonyOS have exceeded 100 million units.

The HarmonyOS project officially open sourced in 2020. According to information disclosed so far, the focus of the next stage of Open Source HarmonyOS development is mainly in three directions.

First is further strengthening underlying capabilities, including the OpenHarmony foundation, HarmonyOS SDK, and unified interconnection capabilities to improve system maturity and stability. Second is AI and embodied intelligence. Finally, continuing to expand the scale of industrial partners.

For an operating system, industrial scaling has never been a single-point breakthrough, but a long-term ecological project.

Today, Open Source HarmonyOS is also gradually moving from "technical open source" toward "industrial influence".
