Report: Anthropic's IPO will be delayed until mid-October; the "largest IPO in history" will have to wait a little longer.
The IPO of Anthropic, which could potentially be worth as much as $2 trillion and rank among the largest in history, is slowing down.
On September 5, Reuters, citing sources familiar with the matter, reported that the company originally planned to release its prospectus as early as next week, but this is now expected to be postponed to late September. Following the prospectus release, the IPO roadshow is expected to begin as early as mid-October, with the final listing date potentially falling a few days before the US midterm elections in November.
This means that Anthropic's window of opportunity for roadshows, pricing, and IPO preparations has further narrowed. As one of the most watched AI companies in the market, its IPO is also seen as an important indicator of whether the AI investment boom will continue into the public market.
The market had previously anticipated that Anthropic's IPO valuation could reach as high as $2 trillion. If realized, this would make it one of the world's largest IPOs; for reference, SpaceX's valuation reached $1.77 trillion when it went public in June of this year.
The $15 billion credit line is yet to be finalized, and the IPO timeline has been postponed.
This delay is related to Anthropic's ongoing financing arrangements.
According to reports citing sources familiar with the matter, the company is seeking to finalize a $15 billion revolving credit facility. Typically, bank analysts involved in the credit arrangement meet with the company after the financing is secured, followed by the company releasing its prospectus, usually several weeks later.
However, given that analysts already have a deep understanding of Anthropic, this preparation window is expected to be shortened. The report states that Morgan Stanley, Goldman Sachs, JPMorgan Chase, and Citigroup are all involved in underwriting Anthropic's IPO.
Anthropic currently aims to list a few days before the US midterm elections in November. However, sources familiar with the matter emphasized that plans, including the listing date, are subject to change, and market conditions, regulatory reviews, and other preparatory work could all affect the final timeline.
