Report: Divergence on AI military use, U.S. Department of Defense close to cutting ties with Anthropic

According to Axios, the US Pentagon is close to severing ties with Anthropic and may list Anthropic as a "supply chain risk" because the restrictions Anthropic has imposed on how its technology can be used have left the Pentagon dissatisfied.

The report says the falling out between the two sides stems from months of intense negotiations over how the US military could use the Claude tool. Anthropic is particularly keen to ensure its artificial intelligence would not be used for mass surveillance of citizens or for developing weapons that could be deployed without human involvement. The US government, on the other hand, wants to use Claude for "all lawful purposes."

The report states that if Anthropic is classified as a supply chain risk, any company wishing to do business with the military would have to cut ties with Anthropic.

An Anthropic spokesperson told Axios that the company is engaged in "productive and good-faith discussions" with the Pentagon, and said the company is committed to using artificial intelligence for national security.

Last year, Anthropic signed a two-year agreement with the Pentagon involving its artificial intelligence Claude Gov prototype and Claude for Enterprise. The negotiations surrounding Anthropic may set the tone for discussions with OpenAI, Google, and xAI, which have not yet been used for classified work.

Anthropic was founded by former OpenAI researchers and positions itself as a more responsible artificial intelligence company, aiming to avoid any catastrophic harm caused by advanced technology.
