OpenAI is doubling down on the Indian market with a bold freemium strategy, announcing it will provide Indian users with a free one-year ChatGPT Go membership, aiming to rapidly expand its user base and influence in this key growth market.

The AI giant announced on Tuesday, October 28, that starting November 4, new users in India will be able to use its affordable subscription plan ChatGPT Go for free for up to a year. This move coincides with the company's inaugural India DevDay Exchange event in Bangalore, highlighting its increasing emphasis on Indian developers and users.

Nick Turley, VP and Head of ChatGPT at OpenAI, stated that this move aims to "help more people across India easily access and benefit from advanced artificial intelligence." The company confirmed that the offer will also apply to existing Go plan subscribers, who will also receive 12 months of free service, with specific redemption details to be announced later.

This large-scale promotional campaign is seen as a continuation of OpenAI's ‘India First’ commitment, and also echoes the Indian government's 'IndiaAI Mission'. As India prepares to host the AI Impact Summit next year, this move further boosts the country's growing momentum in the AI field.

Market Expansion Under the “India First” Strategy

This free giveaway is the latest step in OpenAI’s series of strategic moves in India. According to the company, this campaign is part of its “India First” commitment and supports the momentum of AI development in India.

To deepen its local operations, OpenAI has taken multiple expansion measures in India. The company set up its first office in India in New Delhi and is actively recruiting local talent, including hiring an experienced edtech executive to head its education division in India. Additionally, the company is recruiting for sales positions in India and promoting its services through billboards and online channels.

OpenAI’s market penetration strategy in India relies largely on its successful budget product. The ChatGPT Go plan launched in August this year, priced at 399 rupees per month (less than $5), targeting demand for lower-priced GPT services.

The plan received a strong market response upon launch. OpenAI revealed that "in the first month after the Go plan was launched, the number of paid ChatGPT subscribers in India more than doubled." Based on this robust demand, OpenAI has expanded the ChatGPT Go plan to nearly 90 markets worldwide, validating its pricing strategy.

As an entry-level paid service, ChatGPT Go differs from more expensive versions in terms of features. The plan provides users with higher messaging limits and “extended” access to the company's latest model, GPT-5.

However, the plan does not include all features of the Plus (monthly fee 1,999 rupees) and Pro (monthly fee 19,990 rupees) plans, especially in terms of access for deep research tasks, which is “restricted”.

OpenAI is Accelerating Revenue Expansion

According to a previous article by WallstreetCN, OpenAI is accelerating its revenue expansion. ChatGPT currently has over 800 million active users, but the proportion of paid users is only 5%.

In the enterprise and government sectors, OpenAI is developing customized AI solutions, advancing the commercialization of new products such as the Sora video generation service and AI agents. The company also plans to launch AI-powered personal assistant hardware in collaboration with former Apple designer Jony Ive, further expanding its presence in the consumer market.

OpenAI’s annual recurring revenue is about $13 billion, with 70% coming from ChatGPT consumer subscriptions. Despite significant year-on-year revenue growth, the company’s operating loss in the first half of this year still reached $8 billion. OpenAI executives say they will strive to achieve business growth and financial balance in the future by expanding paid users, launching new products, and innovating financing models.

In the future, OpenAI’s low-cost subscription model is expected to expand to emerging markets such as the Philippines, Brazil, and others.
