So popular! Despite usage restrictions, Sora APP's first-week downloads surpassed ChatGPT.
```
OpenAI's video generation app Sora set an impressive download record in its first week of release. Even with invitation-only access, its performance on the iOS platform has already surpassed ChatGPT's achievements during its debut week.
According to the latest data from app intelligence provider Appfigures, Sora received 627,000 iOS downloads during its launch week, compared to just 606,000 downloads for ChatGPT in its first week.
What is even more noteworthy is that Sora is still operating under an invitation-only access model, while ChatGPT was openly available to a wider public at launch.
This robust performance quickly propelled Sora to the top of the U.S. App Store rankings. After its release on September 30, the app climbed to the number one overall spot in the U.S. App Store within just three days, surpassing the launch performances of other major AI apps including Anthropic's Claude and Microsoft Copilot.
Market Performance Under the Invitation-Only Model
Sora adopted an invitation-only release strategy, forming a sharp contrast with ChatGPT’s initial public launch, making its download performance even more remarkable. Despite the access threshold, the app was still able to achieve such a high download conversion rate among a limited user base.
User reactions on social media platforms strongly supported these data. Content generated by the new Sora 2 video model spread widely across major platforms, with users leveraging the technology to create lifelike deepfake videos.
Appfigures data shows that Sora has maintained a steady growth trend since going live on September 30. On October 1 alone, iOS downloads peaked at 107,800, and subsequently fluctuated within the 84,400 to 98,500 range.
Although Sora was launched in both the U.S. and Canadian markets, while ChatGPT's first week was limited to the U.S. market, even after deducting about 45,000 downloads contributed by the Canadian market, Sora’s performance in the U.S. still reached 96% of ChatGPT’s first week numbers.
The app soared to third place on the overall U.S. App Store chart on its launch day, and successfully claimed the top spot by October 3. This surge not only surpassed the mainstream AI apps like Claude and Copilot, but was also on par with the performance of xAI's Grok at its debut.
However, such applications have also sparked some controversy. Users have begun creating AI-generated content featuring deceased individuals, prompting relevant family members to speak out publicly and demand a halt to this type of behavior.
