Sogou will use AI to remake its input method.

On January 27, Tencent Sogou Input Method officially announced its comprehensive AI transformation, launching the upgraded 20.0 major AI version, with full upgrades of three major models: AI voice, AI translation, and AI typing. Having been around for nearly 20 years, Sogou Input Method has gone through the PC internet era and the mobile internet era. With a user base of 600 million, it has firmly held the top spot in the input method industry. Now, at the starting point of the AI era, Sogou Input Method must proactively embrace AI to stay at the table. According to Wallstreet Insights, this upgrade of Sogou Input Method is not just a simple functional iteration, but marks Tencent’s deep push of AI in the input method sector. Early last year, Sogou Input Method, together with Yuanbao, QQ Browser, and ima, was transferred into Tencent CSIG (Cloud and Smart Industries Group) to accelerate AI product iteration and innovation. Chai Baoquan, the product lead for Tencent Sogou Input Method’s large model, said the 20.0 major AI version is the starting point for Sogou Input Method's full AI transformation, not its endpoint. Typing ability is at the core of input methods. Shen Xiangjin, head of the AI typing product at Tencent Sogou Input Method, pointed out that under the established technical framework, typing input has some limitations—for example, even though the word library is massive, coverage of long-tail words is still lacking, perception of timeliness for new or trending words is insufficient, and the understanding of users' input intentions, context, and language environment remains incomplete. The advent of large AI models provides more possibilities for solving these technical challenges. Against this background, Sogou Input Method’s self-developed AI typing large model has also been fully upgraded, allowing for a deep understanding of context and user intentions, making all-scenario input faster and more accurate. What’s more noteworthy is the customized service for professional scenarios. Sogou Input Method has partnered with authoritative databases such as Tencent Medical Code and Deli Technology to provide original AI customized services for professionals like doctors and lawyers, including fast input of professional terms, legal entries, quick lookup for medication instructions, and other productivity-boosting services. This means the input method is now penetrating deeply into vertical scenarios beyond general usage. Compared to typing, voice input is becoming more people's choice because it’s faster and more convenient. Data shows that the daily average number of voice uses with Tencent Sogou Input Method continues to rise, now approaching 2 billion times. Therefore, AI voice input is also one of the highlights of this upgrade for Sogou Input Method. According to the introduction, this AI voice upgrade leverages Tencent Hunyuan’s AI voice large model, achieving a 40% improvement in voice recognition fluency, an overall accuracy rate of 98%, and a 30% increase in dialect recognition accuracy. However, in Rao Feng’s view, the AI voice algorithm lead at Tencent Sogou Input Method, "hearing more accurately" is the focus of the first half of the competition in AI voice. As the second half arrives, AI voice needs to "hear smarter," shifting from “input” to “recording”—in other words, meeting users' needs for "expression" and "creation." Based on this, Sogou Input Method has launched the "spoken language to written language" feature. Relying on Tencent Hunyuan’s foundational model, this feature can polish colloquial, scattered voice input into smooth, concise written text with one click. The intent behind this feature is obvious: to become the user's "electronic mouthpiece," greatly lowering the threshold for voice input. Meanwhile, to address common ambiguous pronunciations in voice input, such as "ta" (he/she/it) and the "de/di/de" sounds, the new version provides a smart candidate replacement scheme, making edits more convenient. With the increasing frequency of global communication, translation features have also become a must-have for input methods. This time, Sogou Input Method’s AI translation feature has exclusively integrated Tencent Hunyuan 7B translation model, supporting input and instant translation in more than 30 languages, covering social, travel, learning, office, and other scenarios. In last year’s end-of-August International Association for Computational Linguistics (ACL) WMT2025 competition, Tencent Hunyuan-MT-7B won 30 out of 31 language divisions. As AI large model technology rapidly develops and gets implemented, input methods—tools that have existed since the dawn of the internet—are accelerating in expanding the boundaries of AI applications in input scenarios, so that input methods not only allow users to type and express but also work for them. Sogou Input Method’s comprehensive AI upgrade is also one of Tencent’s strategic moves in positioning itself at the entrance of AI. Previously, Sogou Input Method has launched AI search, AI writing assistance, AI synthetic stickers, and text image generation features; among these, requests for AI sticker Hunyuan image searches have reached hundreds of millions. Sogou Input Method’s current AI user base has now exceeded 100 million. From an industry perspective, input methods are high-frequency, rigid-need products with strong user stickiness, making them key scenarios for AI technology adoption. Chai Baoquan said that in the future, Sogou Input Method will use the 20.0 major AI version as its direction, leveraging large model AI technology and Agent capabilities to continually improve intelligent input experiences for users. In two weeks, Sogou Input Method will upgrade its AI writing assistant service. This means input methods will have stronger proactive service capabilities, able to understand user intent and offer help proactively. The comprehensive AI transformation of Sogou Input Method marks the official entry of the input method sector into the AI era. From the perspective of industry competition, the input method market has shifted from pure functionality competition to AI capability competition. Recognition accuracy for voice, translation ability, intelligent prediction, and other AI metrics are now the key competitive dimensions. For Tencent, the AI upgrade of Sogou Input Method is an important landing of its AI strategy on the C-end.
