SpaceX's first superchip factory plan revealed: Initial investment of $55 billion, total amount reaching $119 billion
```
SpaceX is brewing an unprecedented semiconductor manufacturing investment plan, intending to build its first chip factory in Texas.
According to reports, the factory will be located in Grimes County, Texas. The initial investment is $55 billion, and if all phases are completed, the total cumulative investment will reach $119 billion. The project is positioned as a “multi-phase, next-generation, vertically integrated semiconductor manufacturing and advanced computing wafer manufacturing facility,” and has been characterized in the local announcement as a “transformative investment in domestic U.S. semiconductor manufacturing capacity.”
According to the tax exemption notice released by the county, the project is included in a designated reinvestment zone called “SpaceX Reinvestment Zone No. 1 – 2026-001,” located in rural areas along Gibbons Creek Reservoir and Highway 30, about 20 miles east of Bryan-College Station.
The Grimes County Commissioners Court will conduct a public hearing to review the property tax exemption agreement for SpaceX. If the project is approved and proceeds, it will have a profound impact on the landscape of domestic U.S. chip manufacturing capacity.
Project enters tax exemption review stage, and faces joint lawsuit from 77 Central Texas residents
The Grimes County Commissioners Court is scheduled, at 9 a.m. local time on June 3, 2026, to hold a public hearing at the County Judicial and Commercial Center in Anderson to seek public opinion and consider approval of the aforementioned tax exemption agreement. Tax exemption agreements are common incentives used by local governments to attract large capital projects, typically involving partial or full exemption on the value of new real estate.
While this expansion plan is coming to light, SpaceX is also facing legal pressure in Central Texas.
According to reports, 77 residents from McGregor, Moody, Crawford, and Oglesby have recently filed a lawsuit against SpaceX in the 414th State District Court in Waco, accusing the company’s “routine ground impacts” of causing damage to their homes, with total compensation claims exceeding $1 million. McGregor is about 20 miles southwest of Waco and is home to SpaceX’s rocket engine testing facility, making it the most directly related to the lawsuit.
This lawsuit is geographically independent from the Grimes County semiconductor manufacturing project, but it reflects how SpaceX is facing increasingly complex local community relationship challenges while it continues to expand its business in Texas.
