The US government supports Musk and seeks to join X's €120 million lawsuit against the EU, accusing the EU of overstepping its regulatory authority.
According to Bloomberg, the United States is seeking to join a lawsuit filed by Elon Musk seeking to overturn a €120 million (approximately $136.5 million) fine imposed by the European Union on its social media platform X for violating internet rules.
The Trump administration has filed an application with the General Court of the European Union in support of X's attempt to overturn this landmark case. The European Commission's fine, imposed last December, has since become a focal point in increasingly strained transatlantic relations between the US and Europe.
In a statement, Brett Shumate, Assistant Attorney General for Civil Affairs at the U.S. Department of Justice, said:
"The European Commission has improperly attempted to expand its regulatory authority to include U.S. companies under its jurisdiction, even though these companies do not exist or operate within its jurisdiction."
He stated:
“We will not tolerate the European Commission’s overreach of regulatory authority in an attempt to control the engine of innovation and economic growth in the United States.”
The European Commission previously determined that X violated relevant transparency requirements and misled users through the design of its certification mechanism.
