Trump: Iran agrees to "most of the contents" of the "15-point plan," mainly wants to seize Iran's oil; US media: More than 50,000 US troops have been deployed in the Middle East!
There are new developments in the tensions between the US and Iran, but there are clear differences in statements from both sides.
According to Xinhua News Agency, US President Trump declared on the 29th that the indirect negotiations between the US and Iran are "progressing smoothly," and Iran has agreed to "most contents" of the ceasefire "15-point plan". Trump admitted that his main desire is to "seize Iran's oil," and does not rule out occupying Kharg Island, Iran’s oil export hub.
Trump also claimed that oil that Iran will deliver to the US is about to be shipped, as a "proof of their sincerity." "They've given us 20 ships of oil, and shipping starts tomorrow."
However, Iran previously stated that Trump’s remarks about Iran offering a "big gift" are political showmanship and lack factual basis.
Trump: Negotiations "going well," Iran agrees to most terms
In an interview on the 29th, Trump said that indirect negotiations between the US and Iran through the "mediator" Pakistan are "progressing smoothly."
According to Xinhua News Agency, later that day he further stated to the media aboard the presidential aircraft "Air Force One" that Iran had agreed to "most contents" of the ceasefire "15-point plan," and rhetorically asked: "They agreed to most of the terms. What reason would they have not to agree?"
When interviewed by the UK's Financial Times, Trump, when asked if a ceasefire agreement could be reached and the Strait of Hormuz reopened in the next few days, did not disclose specifics.
Trump said: "We have about 3,000 targets left, have already bombed 13,000 targets, and still have several thousand targets to strike. The agreement may be reached very soon."
Trump explicitly states "most wants to seize Iran's oil"
In an interview with the UK's Financial Times, Trump stated bluntly that his main desire is to "seize Iran's oil" and hopes to follow the approach taken "in Venezuela." He said he does not rule out occupying Kharg Island, "We might take Kharg Island, or maybe we won't. We have many options. It also means we would have to station troops on Kharg Island for a while."
Kharg Island is located in the northwest of the Persian Gulf, about 25 kilometers from Iran's coast. It is Iran's largest oil export base, with about 90% of Iran’s crude oil exported from this island. The US military conducted a large-scale strike on Kharg Island on March 13, claiming to have "successfully hit" over 90 military targets on the island, but "reserved" the oil infrastructure. Trump dismissed the island’s defensive capabilities, saying "we can easily take it."
US Special Forces increase troops in the Middle East, more than 50,000 deployed
Citing the US New York Times on the 29th, Xinhua News Agency reported that as 2,500 Marines and 2,500 sailors from the 31st Marine Expeditionary Unit arrived in the Middle East, the total US military deployment in the region now exceeds 50,000 personnel, 10,000 more than usual, but still not enough for a major ground operation.
The report says these Special Forces have not yet been assigned specific tasks, but as professional ground combat troops, they may participate in missions related to the Strait of Hormuz, Kharg Island, or Iranian nuclear facilities.
