Trump: Iran conflict "close to ending"; Iran is "eager" to reach an agreement
On the 14th, U.S. President Trump stated during an interview with U.S. media that U.S. military action against Iran is “nearing completion” and that Iran is “eager” to reach an agreement.
Trump was interviewed by Fox News Channel reporter Maria Bartiromo that day. Bartiromo asked, why “do you keep saying ‘the war is over’?” Trump replied: “I feel (the Iran situation) is already nearing the end. Yes, I mean, I think it’s very close to being over.”
Earlier that day, Bartiromo posted a video on social media, stating that she interviewed Trump, “I asked him, ‘Is the war over?’ He said, ‘It’s over.’”
Some media then issued reports based on Bartiromo’s video post, saying “Trump claims actions against Iran are finished.” Hours later, Bartiromo released an excerpt and video clip of the “full conversation” to clarify the meaning of Trump's remarks.
Fox News Channel also released the related interview video. In the interview, Trump said that although the Iran situation is nearly over, the U.S. has not concluded its mission. “If I withdrew now, it would take them 20 years to rebuild that country. We’re not done yet. We’ll see what happens next. I think they are very eager to reach an agreement.”
Trump also defended U.S. military actions against Iran, stating, “If I hadn’t done this, Iran would already have nuclear weapons now. If they had nuclear weapons, we’d have to call everyone over there ‘sir,’ and we definitely don’t want that.”
Earlier on the 14th, Trump suggested during another U.S. media interview that the U.S. and Iran might return to the negotiating table in Pakistan in the next two days. U.S. Vice President Vance stated that there are many mutual suspicions between the U.S. and Iran; “it’s impossible to expect issues to be solved overnight.”
U.S. media reported that if the U.S. and Iran hold a second round of face-to-face talks, Vance is expected to lead the U.S. delegation again.
On the 11th, U.S. and Iranian delegations began negotiations in Islamabad, Pakistan, which concluded on the morning of the 12th without reaching any agreement. The Iranian side said the negotiations took place “amid an atmosphere of mistrust and suspicion,” and the two sides had disagreements over two or three key issues. The U.S. side said its “red lines” were made very clear, but Iran would not accept U.S. conditions.
