Trump praised Waller and Bowman, saying he will announce the candidate for Federal Reserve Chair in the coming weeks.
On Thursday local time, U.S. President Trump said he is currently interviewing "three to four" candidates for Federal Reserve Chair, and expects to soon decide whom to nominate to succeed current Fed Chairman Jerome Powell. Trump said, "I think each of them would be a good choice."
As for the timetable, Trump said he is not sure whether he will announce the candidate before the end of the year, but indicated that the decision will be made "in the coming weeks."
Trump has previously hinted several times that he hopes the next Fed leader will be more proactive in lowering interest rates to help reduce mortgage costs. He has also signaled that he already has an idea in mind, saying earlier this month that he has "a fairly clear idea" of his nominee.
Nevertheless, on Thursday Trump praised several potential candidates. When asked about Federal Reserve Governor Christopher Waller, Trump said they met again on Wednesday and praised him as "really outstanding." "I mean, he's been there for a long time," Trump said.
Trump also praised the Fed's Vice Chair for Supervision, Michelle Bowman, but did not specifically confirm whether she is on the final candidate list.
In an interview with the media last week, Trump said National Economic Council Director Kevin Hassett and former Federal Reserve Governor Kevin Warsh are frontrunners for the position of next Fed Chair. "I think both Kevins are great. I also think there are a few other very good people."
In recent interviews, Trump has called for a sharp cut in interest rates, saying rates should be reduced to 1%, or possibly even lower.
Earlier this month, the Federal Reserve lowered its benchmark interest rate to the 3.5%–3.75% range, marking the third consecutive rate cut in as many meetings. Three Fed officials voted against the decision, and the Federal Open Market Committee (FOMC) has yet to reach consensus on whether to cut rates further.
