Trump: Starting November 1, a 25% tariff will be imposed on U.S. imports of medium and heavy trucks.

CCTV News reports that on October 6 local time, U.S. President Trump posted on his social platform "Truth Social" stating that starting November 1, 2025, all medium and heavy trucks imported to the U.S. from other countries and regions will be subject to a 25% tariff.

Media reported that this is the latest step in Trump's tariff policies aimed at protecting U.S. domestic industries. The proposal previously underwent fierce lobbying from Detroit's traditional automakers. Trump initially announced last month that tariffs on heavy trucks would take effect on October 1, but due to business concerns, officials delayed the timeline after listening to input from all sides.

Trump posted on social media on Monday:

"Starting November 1, 2025, all medium and heavy trucks entering the United States from other countries will be subject to a 25% tariff."

However, Trump did not disclose implementation details.

The Trucking Industry Will Face Greater Pressure

This announcement is related to the U.S. Department of Commerce's investigation into heavy truck imports launched in April. The investigation is based on Section 232 of the Trade Expansion Act, which allows the government to impose tariffs on imported goods deemed vital to national security.

The investigation focuses on medium and heavy trucks and their parts weighing more than 10,000 pounds, noting that "a small number of foreign suppliers" dominate most of the U.S. import market and calling their behavior "predatory trade practices."

Analysts believe that this new tariff will put even greater pressure on the trucking industry, which has already been affected by tariffs on steel and aluminum and stricter environmental regulations. But supporters think it will help strengthen domestic manufacturing. In another post announcing the tariff last week, Trump said that the move is intended to "protect our great heavy truck manufacturers from unfair foreign competition."

"Trump's plan to impose tariffs on imported heavy trucks is a huge victory for American workers and outstanding manufacturers." Nick Iacovella, a member of the protectionist "Coalition for a Prosperous America," said after Trump first announced it, "This move will strengthen this key industry and protect it from unfair foreign competition."

U.S. Truck Trade Exceeded $20 Billion Last Year

According to U.S. Department of Commerce data, last year the U.S. imported about 245,000 medium and heavy trucks, with a trade value exceeding $20 billion.

This proposal is likely to have a broad impact on several companies, including the Freightliner brand of Daimler Truck Holding AG, Mack Trucks of Volvo Group, as well as Peterbilt and Kenworth brands of Paccar Company.

Among them, International Motors LLC (formerly Navistar) is most dependent on imports, with about 98% of its U.S. trucks coming from Mexico; Daimler's figure is about 83%. In contrast, Paccar and Volvo produce almost all of their trucks domestically in the U.S.

The new tariff is one of Trump's continuously expanding industry-specific tariff measures. The U.S. government has previously imposed tariffs on imported steel, aluminum, copper, automobiles, and auto parts. Additional tariffs on imported softwood, lumber, cabinets, bathroom cabinets, and upholstered wooden furniture will take effect on October 14, and some tariffs will be further increased from January 1 next year.

In addition, the U.S. government is still conducting Section 232 investigations into foreign-made solar panels, commercial airplanes, semiconductors, critical minerals, robots, medical equipment, and industrial machinery.

Media report that such sector-targeted tariff policies also give Trump greater flexibility, as he is imposing tariffs at the national level based on the International Emergency Economic Powers Act (IEEPA), which is currently facing a federal court challenge. The Supreme Court has scheduled the related debate for November 5.
