Wang Xinghai, assistant president of China Merchants Bank, has resigned, and the market is watching his "next stop."

China Merchants Bank has announced another round of personnel changes at the senior management level.

On September 7, China Merchants Bank issued an announcement confirming that Wang Xinghai, Assistant President of the Bank, had officially resigned from his position for work reasons, effective immediately, and would no longer hold any position in the bank or its subsidiaries. Currently, Wang Xinghai's information is no longer available on the leadership introduction page of China Merchants Bank's official website.

Market sources indicate that Wang Xinghai's next destination is likely China Merchants Financial Holdings. If this move is confirmed, it further highlights the ongoing and close management interaction between China Merchants Bank and its parent group financial holding platform.

This personnel change also leaves vacancies in China Merchants Bank's future senior management team. Who will fill these vacancies, and who will take over the strategically important position at the Shenzhen branch, are also attracting considerable attention.

Who is Wang Xinghai?

As a typical internally developed senior executive, Wang Xinghai's resume at China Merchants Bank reflects the bank's development path for young cadres.

Born in November 1976, Wang Xinghai was the only member of the post-75 generation in the previous senior management team of China Merchants Bank. He joined China Merchants Bank in 1999 and has been with the bank for 27 years. His early career involved rotating between key branches and departments directly under the head office. He previously served as the deputy general manager of the Beijing branch and the general manager of the Institutional Clients Department and Pension Finance Department of the head office.

In recent years, his career has entered a fast track. Starting in March 2023, he successively served as the deputy general manager and general manager of the Shenzhen branch; at the end of 2025, he successfully entered the senior management of the head office, serving as assistant general manager while continuing to oversee the Shenzhen branch, achieving two key promotions within a year. The latter position remained in place until September 2026, when Wang Xinghai resigned from his position as assistant general manager of China Merchants Bank.

Senior management mobility and cadre development paths

Prior to Wang Xinghai's resignation, there were several important personnel "interactions" between senior executives of China Merchants Financial Holdings and China Merchants Bank, which made the internal cadre transfer and training trajectory of China Merchants Group clearer.

On August 28th of this year, China Merchants Financial Holdings announced the removal of Li Delin from his position as Vice President. Li had previously resigned from his position as a non-executive director of China Merchants Securities on August 10th. Li Delin also bears a strong "China Merchants Bank imprint," having joined the bank in 2013 and risen through the ranks to become Vice President of the head office before being transferred to China Merchants Financial Holdings in April 2024.

Earlier, in April 2026, Wang Xiaoqing, the general manager of China Merchants Financial Holdings, was appointed as the president of China Merchants Bank. Prior to that, he also had a long period of experience working at China Merchants Bank.

Currently, Jiang Chaoyang, the incumbent vice president of China Merchants Financial Holdings, Guo Xikun, the chief compliance officer, and Liu Hui and Wang Xiaoqing, the two former general managers, all have senior management experience at China Merchants Bank. If Wang Xinghai ultimately takes up a new post at China Merchants Financial Holdings, the latter will further strengthen the cadre rotation mechanism between China Merchants Financial Holdings and China Merchants Bank.

Who will take the helm at the Shenzhen branch?

Wang Xinghai's departure has also left many "vacancies" within China Merchants Bank that urgently need to be filled.

One of the more important questions is who will succeed the head of the Shenzhen branch?

Within China Merchants Bank, the Beijing, Shanghai, and Shenzhen branches are particularly outstanding and are known as "top-tier branches." These branches not only lead in terms of employee numbers and asset size, but their branch managers are often concurrently held by senior executives at the assistant president level from the head office. With Wang Xinghai's resignation, the new leader of the Shenzhen branch, one of these three top-tier branches, remains to be announced.

Furthermore, prior to this high-level personnel reshuffle, China Merchants Bank delivered a solid interim report: In the first half of 2026, China Merchants Bank achieved operating revenue of RMB 178.181 billion, a year-on-year increase of 4.83%; net profit attributable to shareholders of the parent company reached RMB 76.445 billion, a year-on-year increase of 2.02%. This robust financial foundation provided the bank with more flexibility in coping with the management change.
